great news, horrible news
We finally made it to the track and got to make some passes.
great news: my best ET to date
bad news: we toasted dads motor (mostly my fault)
the base line setup Nox gave us works great, and once we get more consistant, we can fine tune with the light springs and aluminum bolts that have been ordered from MTC. poppint the lever off the line with no sliding of the clutch by hand really does work. i was a bit scared my first pass and didnt rev it up(but i popped the lever), so i proceded to stall the bike. damn 5s 60 ft lol. second pass reved it to about 7000-7500 popped the lever. bike wheelies a bit off the line, starts to settle down, lifts the front a bit as the lock up is kicking in, shift to second, bike lifts a bit again, i short shift, then hit the limiter next time, short shift(i need a shift light and practise!!) end up crossing in 5th as planned. go get my slip

had a few more passes, but i didnt have very good runs,i need more practise one run i launched at about 8000+ and pulled a big wheelie past the 60 ft mark. got out of the groove and had to let off, short shifted at 8000 twice. ran a 9.68. ill be filling my front axle with lead..... the next run i didnt get a good burn out and spun off the line(1.70 60ft 4.21 330) and ran a 9.62 @146. last run of the day, i had a horrible burn out and spun really bad off the line. about 5 feet out i was sideways, and ended up in the other groove. had to back out of the throttle a lot. 2.43 60ft lol i ran 11.30, and still beat the 600 in the other lane by 1.39
now the bad news. i got back t the pits and my guage on my shifter is leaking. so i call it a day. dad is done for the day. one of his rear pegs broke off, and he wants a shift light. hes all over the place shifting, but loving running the bike, and popping the lever off the line(his best pass was a 10.23@135 with a 1.75 60ft, and he had some much lower 60fts, but bad runs) so i get on dads bike and go for a run. im not sure if it was spinning or not, but i hit the limiter several times,(one time it didnt shift) and i ran out of gear at the end of the track. (no 7th gear) way up on the limiter, and let off before i crossed the line. pulled the clutch in (forgot about the lock up) and the bike shut off. i pulled off to the side, try to start it, and it dies, and is making funny sounds. pack up and go home
this morning we took the pan off, and found some chunks (yes chunks) that apear to be piston material. the lines/ ridges look like the bottom of the piston crown. bike is stripped and we are about to pull the motor. updates later. back to the shop.....

So sorry to see that, especially after all the work you have put into bikes. Are you going to rebuild it or replace it?

what PTV were you running on exh?
If its the springs, its odd you didn't tag any of the intakes, eh?

right now its looking like a rebuild. i have 3 used 86mm pistons and 1 new one, and a damaged block that i told dad he could have since i pretty much roasted his bike. i was going to use them in mine, but ran out of time/ money this spring to get the block sent away to be fixed.
one thing is certain, no matter what happens, the bike is getting a set of carpenter valve springs like mine.

Karl, PTV =stock? ... so i didnt measure. everything was stock except the muzzy dummy shaft, R&D trans, and the light porting i did. stock block, basegasket, headgasket, head wasnt milled, stock cams, stock cam timing...

Ouch. Suddenly my rear wheel issue doesn't seem so bad...
I know the limiter can cause problems, but it never impacted my 12. I probably hit it 50+ times on drag passes, and it has been tagged north of 180 mph a couple of times as well. I always just let off as soon as it touched.
Congrats on the times and condolences on the damage...

the guys that were watching said i had fire coming out of the pipe for most of the second half of the track so i hit the limiter a lot it wasnt just a touch. i just tried to shift and didnt let off till i ran out of gear....(very dumb) i ran 10.23 at 118..... the damage may have started on a pass that dad made. he had his thumb on the turn signal button not the horn button, and hit the limiter pretty hard there too without letting off the gas.
i might have had the cams 1 tooth off too, even though i counted several times. i never checked the centerlines as it was just stock parts....

can you even tag an intake valve. the intake valve is always closed at the top of the stroke. the ex. is open on the exhaust stroke, almost till the top of the stroke..
I have banged the limiter many many times and never had that problem, even on spray, just until recently ( big shot ) and mine was no where near that bad, sure you werent off a hair on cam timing ?

sure is possible to tag the piston with the intake valve; it chases the piston down and can catch it.
or worse, open early and hit it at the top.

yeah, i think it can go low 1.4 60 ft once we get it tuned better. looking at my logs, its bogging down to around 4000 rpm after i pop the lever. too much static eh? plus i have a huge rich spot at the same area. im also going to fill my front axle with lead to get it as agressive as possible. remember im not 68 inches like most guys, a little ballast cant hurt. i want to move my battery up front, but i need to keep the lights.... might try adding some weight to the front of the oil pan if i have enough time.
tore into dads motor a bit deeper tonight. the bearing are all pretty good, i was sure that i was going to find mangled rod bearings going by what i have seen and read about on here, but they had a few shiny spots from break in, and looked to have normal wear. got lucky i guess.
i snapped this pic before the camera died. the oil has been drained for a couple days, and theres still lots of purple on the trans.

i also drained the break in oil out of my bike tonight(if its not broken in now i dont know when it would be) and filled it up with the purple stuff. (filled the filter first) i started it and the oil light went right out.
