timing chain wear---check this out

the service manual says the max. stretch on the timing chain is approx . 1 1/2 mm.
if it is your suppose to replace it AND THE CAMSHAFTS AND THE FUCKING CRANK SHAFT.
i guess they think the teeth on the sprockets are shot.i have 43,000 miles on the engine and you have to split the crankcase to replace the timing chain.i was planing on replacing it since its apart.what would you engine building guys do. i'm going to replace the chain anyway unless you talk me out of it.

You dont have to.... but since you have yours apart already...
I have buddy, that took a pair of vice grips and just snapped that little piece off below te cam chain... I used a dremel tool on the one I had. that allowed me to take the chain off without splitting the cases.

Why not.......

I have heard of a lot of motors going because they could have but did not.......

60 dollar part, well worth it, I did not change my cams though.......

I like MM's idea, that is a cool fix......

I will do that before I put my other motor back together.......

I replaced mine because I kept getting different readings with a manual tensioner, sometimes loose, sometimes tight.I did not want to hop a tooth or touch a piston with a quick throttle change.

The only bad timing chains I've replaced were bad because the owners didn't know how to adjust their manual tensioner.

NONE OF YOU GUYS HAS SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE REPLACEMENT OF CAMS AND CRANK WHEN A TIMING CHAIN IS REPLACED.....THATS FUCKING NUTS!

my cam chain had kinks, so did dads. both are getting replaced. didnt measure stretch. as far as cams go... just get adjustable sprockets if you think the teeth are worn... is there a way to measure them??

Yep, too tight of an adjustment on a manual tensioner has runined many good engines.

As stated above, just remove the casting tab that prevents the chain from jumping a tooth while the chain is slack when the cams are removed etc. Its not needed as long as you make sure your in time at the crank and cam sprockets when you reassemble. Just snap it of and grind smooth. Keep the debri out of the crankcase by stuffing rags in the area.

I wouldnt worry about the gears being worn out, they should be fine as long as you dont see individual indentations in the gear of the alternating flat plate links. Typically worse on the crank than on the cam gears.

Mine wore out before I had the manual adjuster on.I was told the stretch came from all the sudden on/off throttle inputs.
