hip operation

I just had my hip replaced and they tell me I can't bend my hip pass 90*.This will effect my tuck.I'm just curious if anyone else knew of someone who had a total hip replacement and still goes to the track. What would be some of the obstacles needed to overcome? How safe would it be to mount foot pegs on the swingarm and is this legal? thanx

Sorry Jim, I sold my old block when I got the billet.

Thats good news Starchild ! Is his bike a stock styled bike or more in the line of a car tire bike?

Hey Pete!
I don't frequent this board as much as others and just now caught sight of this thread. While I'm not a very good drag racer (I'm just getting started there), I do land speed race which requires even more of a tight tuck! I had a hip replacement 14 years ago at age 26. (long boring story but I'll tell it if anyone really wants to know.)

The doctors will tell you that you are absolutely not supposed to bend past 90*. Their reason is so you don't accidentally pop the ball out of the joint. Do I listen to them, no! LOL You have to remember that this is more commonly an "older" person operation. The older folk are generally not in the best of health & conditioning & their muscle tone is usually not all that it could be.

First thing to do is understand what's going on in there. If you're going to push the limit understand how the joint works so you can do your best to not pop it out. Crossing your legs is a big no no (ok, I know you don't cross legs on a bike but understanding the dynamics will put your mind at ease) Crossing your legs is the easiest way to pop the ball out of the joint as you're gaining leverage by doing so.

By the same token, spreading your legs and bending forward is less likely to pop it out. I grilled my ortho on the risks of childbirth since I had my surgery before I had my daughter. He assured me that the child birth positioning pushes the ball into the joint and that it was highly unlikely to pop it out from that position. (I know, ick!) but keeping that in mind has helped me visualize if I could be getting into a harmful position.

Now apply that to the bike. You have the bike between your legs so that will help to keep it from going to far side to side. What you really need to do is work on your glutes to get them as strong as possible. The muscles will help hold everything in place. While you're recovery don't push it too far. You'll feel it pull and just don't push it.

I had the absolute worst muscle tone when I had the surgery done. I couldn't even lift my leg because the muscles had gotten so weak. I was able to build it up and have never had a problem. I do yoga and all types of exercises regularly and really the only thing that holds me back is the constraints that occurred to my leg/hip prior to the hip replacement.

When I tuck on the bike or even when doing yoga & the likes I can get my chin down to about 4 inches from my knee. That is obviously well past 90*. I'm comfortable & confident in doing so but I always pay attention to how if feels so I don't push it too far.

I've always been straight up with my ortho's and told them I'm active & I'm going to push the limits. I then will only work with the ones that accept that I do ride & will continue to ride & push the limits. Most that are open minded will give appropriate advice along with the speech on not pushing tooooo far.

This surgery is getting more common amongst younger more active people & I do believe they're finding that if you're healthy & keep up the muscle tone that the risks are minimal.

Ok, done with my mini book. Let me know if you want to know any more. I'm open about it so ask away.

Deb

Thanks Dahmurf, now tell me what are glutes? They basically have been having me do butt squeezes, squats, leg lifts and side leg sweeps.Come to think of it,those side sweeps I should do more of so I can swing my right leg over the bike to get on.

Glutes are your tushy!
Everything they have you doing is right on track. You want your butt, upper inner & outter thigh muscles to all be in top shape. Anything around that joint is going to help keep it in place. It's all good & will all help you get back on the bike & track.

But before you get all hot & heavy on the bike & track make sure you've thought through the consequences. Not to be a killjoy but a bad fall on that side could break your femor (upper leg bone) that they put the "knife" in. The "knife" is that knife looking metal piece with the ball on top that they stuck down in your bone. If you bust that off then you're quickly running out of options for a further fix.

But.. that being said, I'm still riding. Actually, I didn't even start riding until several years after the surgery! (I'm a late bloomer) I even wrecked last year & broke my collarbone. I actually thought, as I was flipping... "not the hip, not the hip" and I flipped completely past the hip & thought, whew, good! LOL

I know the reality of what I do and the fact that if I go down hard & just right, I may well end up in a wheelchair but I choose to live with gusto in the here & now. Hubby assures me he'll build me a nice side hack if the need should ever arise!

BTW, I could provide visual aid photos to this post but don't wanna gross y'all out!

Let me know if I can help and keep us posted on your progress.
Deb

Deb, do you watch how hard you launch to minimize the chance for wheelies? I think my 6'6" height might make me crouch a little tighter.Presumptuous I know!

Wheelie? Moi? See now that's why I'm not a very good drag racer! LOL
I've only had the wheel off the ground once, by accident! Of course I've also only made 14 passes in 4 visits to the strip so that's not saying much! The most I'll launch at right now is 4k on my busa because I don't know how to ride a wheelie & I don't want to get in over my head! Slamming my butt to the ground at the 60' cause I don't know what I'm doing doesn't sound like fun to me! LOL
My primary racing focus right now is Land Speed so I'm not pushing it real hard at the drag strip. I have a goal I need to conquer in LS this year & then I may put more effort into drag. I just can't justify pushing it too hard at the strip cause I don't want to risk hurting my LS goal. I plan to just gradually work up on the RT & launch. I can haul ass once I'm moving I'm just not real quick to get moving! LOL

Tuck wise, I still don't see a big risk on launch. You can adjust your legs out to the back to get your head lower if you feel too much pull on your hip. A button shifter & drag pegs will keep you from squishing down towards/beyond that 90* if it feels iffy to you. I don't even have drag pegs & half the time I run with my legs flappin out the back! (yeah I know, not smart but what the hey!)

Talk things through with your doc on the 19th & tell him what you want to do & listen to his concerns. A lot could have changed in the last 14 years!

And before you throw in the towel on riding or racing, look into some crash/injury stats. A broken collarbone is a common motorcycle injury. I've heard of broken/fractured pelvis from a MC wreck but generally they are on the street & involving a car. You need to understand your risk but also understand the likelyhood of that type of injury.

I had to have my collarbone plated and feel that I'm at far greater risk of reinjuring or having a worse injury because of it & I believe it's far more likely then messing up the hip. But either way, I know the risk & I'm willing to take it just to race. Some day I may get injured beyond riding but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I don't want to not ride for fear of what could happen. If it never happens then I loose all those years of living. If it does happen then at least I lived up until that point.

And as a fall back plan I keep this link handy to remind me of what can be done:
http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=c860df3ccf66c83fb61bb2ffd934330b.842676
(hopefully it's still good, I can't check it right now)

hey Pete!

I voted that you keep racing.

It seems many of us have had injuries that will get bad if that part gets hurt again, but unless its gonna kill you, keep after it.

I have to launch w/my L foot on the peg because of past stuff.

You too can mod yr riding style to accommodate yr delicate parts

I was able to slowly get my foot over the seat and sit on the bike for the first time.Ah that felt good!Even with the bike lowered,I still couldn't lift my up onto the foot peg.I'm getting there,It will just take some more time.It has been awhile since the bike stayed together that I'm getting antsy.I've been riding for 31 years and it's in my blood. What started it was I was where y2k works out of and was smelling that race gas fumes.Someone please make it into a cologne.

Funny! That race fuel will get you going!!
You'll be back before you know it, just don't push it too soon! Hate to see you put a leg down & topple
over cause you're not ready yet! It will go by fast I promise! I've had two - stay off the bike - surgeries since I started riding & it seemed like an eternity at the time but in hindsight it was no time at all!

Off the cumadin finally so thats one step forward but the prosthetic is still sinking into the femur and hasn't fused yet.A lot of pain still. But I at least got them to continue my therapy and am starting to drive. He told me today to wait three months from the surgery to take it to the track.Nice surgeon.

He just said wait the three months and I can tuck.I commented on falling on the hip and he said it definitely would be a problem.I told him if left to my own,I would slowly stop doing the exercises and needed the push of a therapist to keep me on track.Just how I am.No problem,he wrote out a prescription for more therapy at the health center I go to just to grease the wheels. My right knee is still all tender from when they snapped my leg out of joint.I can go about 1/2 hour driving now before it bothers me so at least I'm not caged in the house.
