getting started racing

What's the best bike to start out drag racing on? Assuming I want reliability at first.
I'm thinking about going for a stock Jap inline-4, I think a Jap bike would be faster than a Harley, right? Are wheelie bars necessary?

waaaay faster!
any of the big bikes are really fast with basic mods. a zx12r or zx14 or even a busa would be great to start with. if i was going to get a brand new bike, it would be the 08 14, but im a die hard 12r fan(so im just going to make mine faster). the busa is a great bike, and the 08 is a stronger version of the old busa(they stroked it 2mm for 08) but ill never drive one :P the 08 14 and 08 busa are pretty much even imo.

what are your ET goals? no, training wheels(wheelie bars) arent needed:P, just stretch it. but a slick and bars would make it easier if you dont get much practise

You do not need fast, but consistancy. I've seen a Harley do pretty well on the track without much.Basically an air shifter and steering damper.

For reliablility I've done almost 40 passes if I remember correctly on my 92 Honda CBR 600 F2 during an 8 hour day with lots of hot lapping.....60s and 1/4 ets were pretty much the same about every pass.

I would think you may want to ask yourself how fast do you think is a good idea for you to go compared to whatever you've run in the past. Remember, the 12 is a 9 second bike in the right hands....you don't want a bike that keeps trying to throw you off the first couple of gears and doesn't allow you learn and progress. Just my 2 cents.
