weekend at the drags, took championship, first time spraying and broke.
Well we had a full weekend of drag racing here in san antonio. Friday night was our regular program, streetriders shootout. I ended up taking the win in street e/t and the overall points championship for the year, this is a back to back championship. we stayed the night for saturday's hurricane alley race. I havent done my 4 nozzle dry shot yet, still waiting on parts so I just sprayed the airbox with a 32 jet and added some fuel to the map, first pass it went 9.14 @ 153 with 127 in te 1/8, not bad but it definatley needs more NOS, any way made another pass with more fuel added and it slowed down some and when I pulled the clutch in at the end it went snap, I just installed 80lb clutch springs in it. So anyway I am done for the day, payed 80 bucks worth of entry fees and didnt even make the first round. Left the bike alone since I dont have any parts anyway. well I just pulled the cover and this is what I found, its the clutch actuator that rounded off, has any one seen this before and whats the fix. heres the pic..

been there done that! (well except the winning and nitrous part)
whats your stack height like? when that happened to me, my stack height was 2mm below the service limit!

this piece is probly fucked too(like the one pictured) :

old vs new

check the stack height! i didnt have a problem after i fixed my stack height, but when i just replaced the puller, i broke 2 more before i knew what was going on(still learning about the bike)
oh, and i run 6 muzzy springs

yep my puller looks like that too, definately not squared like the new one, Last time I mic the fibers they were at the service limit. so is there any stronger puler shafts and actuators out there.

I just checked stack height 55.5mm the book shows 56.8 being the minimum. can that little bit make that much difference ? and cause this kind of failure

yes, thats what did it. heres a few responces i got when i was learning about what caused this to happen to me
quote VH:
Also, the "POSITION" of the Clutch arm that the Cable is attached to makes ALL of the difference in the world. This postion is "ONLY" Controlled by STack Height! You want the arm in a position where the piece that broke is about 50 to 60% ENgaged BEFORE You start pulling the cluthc pack apart. When fully disengaged this part should be 80 to 100% around the CLutch Pull Shaft.
How would you know any of this? You mark the position of the arm when all of the play is taken out of the lever on the cover with everything hooked up. then remove the cover and look to see what position the part is in. If the front edge is not 50 to 60% (Just past the Middle or right at the Middle / center of the shaft you have too low of a clutch stack height.
DM:
The initial failure was the result of not positioning the notch in the actuator shaft properly on the pull rod lik VH said.
ninja12:
stack height too low. when you put the new puller in it will NOT grab the center shaft deep
enough. The lower the stack height the farther out on the tip of the puller teeth the center makes contact.
look at the last fiber almost bottomed out.
If you try to JUST replace that puller, get two ! The first won't last long enough to fool you.
Pull the center shaft out and inspect the inside of the hole for burs.
If you have any burs polish them out with a dremel , then replace the puller, center shaft, and roller bearing.
Looks like the center BURNED thru that puller, right?
VH:
The reason I KNEW Your stack was too low is I did the EXACT Same thing! The Muzzy does it sooner because it has 1 plate less and starts near the Low number.
Remember I said that you needed a couple of 1.4 to add in? 1.4 + 1.4 = 2.8 + 54.56 = 57.36 at the High end of the stack! Add then toward the Inner basket where there is more heat! 2.0 + a 1.4 in 2 places! Use the clutch frictions until they wear out!
ALso get 2 of the 1.6 also!
Makes no difference or Less if you have 2 steels together, Just a little more heat dissapation

Very nice, glad to see a 12 still running strong. I have heard a few fellas having similar problems with heavyduty springs being shimmed. Saws right through at the big end.
One of the guys at the mile that ran a bigblock and nos stated he had simliar problems. His clutch was out of line hard to pull. I think Karl was there at the time.

Ya it does, my bike is to nice and runs hard so I decided to do a few thing to it lately, the pipe was one. Forks got internally lowered as well. She deserved that good looking pipe.

.
This is what it apears happened, what I cant figure out is why the puller rod is still spinning, it has the roller bearing but it looks like its spinning when disengaged and is sawing right through the actuator.

well i put at least 60 passes on the bike(6 muzzy springs) after i replaced those 2 parts, and fixed the stack height by adding some extra steels. this is what they look like now

replaced one 2.0 with two 1.6s and added an extra 1.6
