So your cutter cuts all the angles and radiuses at once? Do you use a Serdi machine? I'm kicking around the idea of buying a seat machine myself.

Yes, its cuts the entire seat profile at once. It's a flat carbide "blade" cutter. The same as a Serdi style cutter. In fact they are interchangeable.

But the machine we use is a Sunnen VGS20. It's a brand-new machine we got in August 07 to compliment the 5 axis CNC machine. There are a few differences in the Sunnen and the Serdi but they work the same. The Serdi uses a "live" pilot where the pilot is spinning in the valve guide with the cutter. Where as the Sunnen uses a taper pilot and it's moved from guide to guide. We have used both machines and found the Sunnen VGS20 to produce more concentric seats. Seat depths can be controlled to less than .001" and runout to less than .0003" per inch of valve dia. This makes shimming the buckets easier and valve seating excellent.

The valve job is the most under rated and least talked about aspect of a performance engine build. It's also the least understood, even by some of the "expert head guys" out there. It's extremely important.

That is some damn fine concentricity, no doubt related to the pilot design.

I can't agree more about the importance of proper seat shape. Unfortunately, there are as many opinions about it as there are people who are cutting/grinding seats (maybe more for the capricious ones).

What is your opinion of seat profiles for drag racing vs roadracing?

Jim,
yes indeed, my ole bucket o' bolts with Y2K signature repaired/tweaked head made some good hp today: solid 234 STD NA @ 11.5-12K.

JohnnyCheese did his magic tuning and prob could have even coaxed out a couple more hp but I was way more than "just satisfied" as it had never hit that mark before.

Am I happy with the results?. Oh yeah...

Is the Senior Science Fair Project completed? Nope...

The brains behind this effort think there is a bit more hp to be had. A mighty big thanks to those brains who have patiently explained stuff to me over the past 6 years.

Tim,
i'll call you today, got tied up when i got home yesterday.

Woppi,
That red stuff as KZ say is Red Line Assembly lube (mixed with a lil oil). Don't know if it really helps, but it's colorful. I like it.

Having your #8's out of calibration is never a good idea. That's why I use the competitor's #7's. If you need more than six of those for calibration, then you and you insulin should have stayed at home.

TFA is very interested in your #7's although we are dedicated Popeye's & #8 affectionado's (sp?).

If the #7 tip is secret, PM me, I will only divulge to TFA members; insulin is not on our scorecard.
