trans won't move in or out of gear
I went to start the bike up and I could not get it to shift in any gear.It won't go into nuetral, nothing.I have just installed the MTC lock up and know about the extension that goes on.What did I do wrong? It shifted ok before the clutch install.

Pull the cover back off in the sidestand to not lose oil! abd take a look! You did not say if that was with the engine running or not running! if Running, you may have "Issues" with the Clutch release set up! If not running, then take the cover off and look around!

Pete,
i am with VH, yank the clutch basket; you are prolly good at that by now
first make sure the linkage isn't somehow binding against the countershaft spk cover
Is it stuck in neutral? hopefully?
When you put the cases together, the trans was in neutral?

I just pulled the cover and can't find anything.I'll go ahead and pull the basket.I dread the thought of pulling the motor again to split the cases, but I'll first drop the radiator, header and oil pan to have a look see on the shifting drum. And no I didn't make sure it was in nuetral when I put the cases together. Why does that matter? My basket was still on so I was able to turn that and the drum to see all the gears pop into place.
When I started it,the oil light stayed on until I blipped the throttle and then came back on when the rpm's lowered. So I have an issue there and would have to drain the coolant anyways to double check the oil pump is engaged.

yep, pull the basket before pulling the motor.
look at the oil gear, and the shift star, etc. make sure all that stuff is right.
you may not have to pull down the motor.
when you took the motor apart, did you pull the oil drive gear out of the cases?? If so did you replace the circlip?? REAL important.
also, i don't know why i do it, but i always make sure the gears are in neutral before putting the bottom case on the upper one

Did you test shift it as you were putting the motor together? If not you just learned a big lesson.

guys the zx 12 shift drum and forks can be reached from the oil pan removal. the shift forks are tricky. read the manual carefully and place them as they say. the # on the side make a difference on placement. i will bet the forks and drum are out of whack. of coarse the clutch basket will have to come off to remove the shift drum and the fork rods. he also states that the bike shifted before the mtc. that kinda sounds like something went wrong there, that doesnt make sense. he didnt clarify whether the clutches were engaging or whether the trans was jammed in a nuetral spot. that makes a difference.

My daughter went in for emergency surgery Sunday and came home today. That and my wife thought it was a better idea to go out to dinner for our 19th anniversary Monday, rather than work on the bike Go figure!I got a chance to look at it today. When I split the case,I never took the drum or forks out ,so I knew they were in the right order.I removed the shifting shaft and pawl.Nothing, put it back on and it starts shifting fine.I'm not going to argue with it.
I disassembled the oil pump and think I'll order a new one. There were scratches all over the inside of the outer housing.I also noticed a small pin missing that goes from the oil pump housing into the case.I'm hoping that was the culprit.
When I drained the oil to pull the pan,I found a piece of metal.I don't know where it came from but could be babbit.I was pretty liberal with the assembly lube on the new mains and rod bearings.I'm getting tired of working on this bike and just want to button it all back up,start it and make sure it has oil pressure and park it until spring.I need to straighten out the garage to fit the wife's carin for winter.I don't want to have pieces all over getting dust in who knows where.
I usually have enough money to buy the occaisional part while working on the bike but have been thinking of saving up to have somebody go thru the whole motor/tranny.How much do you think that would cost me?

pete
that dowel is critical and leaving it out would certainly make yr oil pressure go S.
that piece of metal?? If it was from the bearings you'd have a mess of other stuff in the pan.
If you bring the motor to someone to disassemble / reassemble it shouldn't cost a whole lot of $$$.
I wish you lived a bit closer to texas...
Hope your daughter is mending well.

Oil pump check, pin is critiical.
I'm with you on the zx12 , I'm so tired of fixing this bike I didn't know if i would go crazy or go broke. Opps went broke a couple times so I just upgraded to the zx14.
I'm sure it's no suprise that I felt the early zx12s had major
design flaws that were exposed with drag racing. If you can get
a VERY GOOD BUILDER, spend the extra money.
many can build the perfect engine except #3 rod will knock if you race it for long.

If I was worried about anything, I would make a good wooden Crate for the Lower end and send it to Texas to Johnny Cheese. Use Plywood with Dry wall screws. Not too heavy and can be reused again. Call Mr, Cheesman. If anything, he will not charge you enough so you will have to adjust what his final price is in a Tip! He is the kind of person You could send your Mom to Blind and Deft and be treated fair! SInce it is WInter time coming, You may just want to do this NOW!!!???

Gears seem to shifting now.My cable is adjusted all the way out on both ends,so I'm going to replace that.It seems like every time I took apart the clutch assembly and reassembled, the cable needed more and more slack taken out of.
The oil pump had me thinking, why don't they nicklesil the rotor and outer piece seeing as how easily they scratch.I was thinking that may make them a little more durable.Dealer sold me the pump for $27 which retailed for $40.Not bad!
Never paid attention to the coolant pump housing and just noticed that drip hole.I was starting to get a leak and could not find it so a new seal is on order also.
VH, I think the Cheeseman would be a good prospect, but if I was to go that route,it would take me maybe 2 years to save that scratch.I see light at the end of the tunnel, lets see how it plays out.
