Lowering strap question?

I just got my strap from Shnitz and I remember reading about it hitting the upper fork tubes. How do you remedy this? I am racing tommorow and would like to get this straightend out. Can I just grind the corner off the strap or what? Thanks!!!

either put the strap mounts on the bOTTOM bolts of the calipers, or, if you like it on the top like I do(for strap length), use washers to space the strap bracket away from the fork tube.

That strap is a piece of shit. I shouldn't have to space it out with washers. I tried every possible combo to make it work without it looking all rigged up. Very poor design for the 12.

Grinder wheel

I took a grinder wheel to mine to clearance the buckels on both the Schnitz brand strap (using now) and another brand strap. Also be sure to mount them at an angle, use the angle of the caliper as a reference. I am going to snap a couple pics for you now- see http://www.dontbescaredracing.com/photos/misc

I will try to post them here as well.

Yeah, a universal piece of shit.

I decided to grind it so it would fit. I could put it on the bottom holes too but don't want it to scratch the forks up. If I spaced it out enough to clear I would have to get different bolts for piece of mind. I don't want to risk screwing anything up because the strap doesn't fit properly.

The strap wasn't designed for a single bike. Someone took the time to produce a strap with steel endpieces that attach to caliper bolts. If it doesn't fit perfectly on your specific bike, tough titty, make it work. If you aren't happy with it, make your own.

My qestion is how tight should the strap be or how low should the front of your bike be?

jesszx,
1. on the bottom holes it won't scratch anything

2. on the top holes, you need spacers and, YES, you need longer bolts; Sears has 'em

3. I wouldn't tilt em in the top holes if you are going to use often, because they will wear thru more quickly from being bunched in the corner of the bracket

fastestr1,
pull down on the strap until you compress the forks an inch or two. Too much and you have no fork movement at all, not enough and you aren't getting full benefit

I understand it was made for a bunch of different bike's but u you would think someone would make one that would work properly. Not to say the one I have now doesn't work. It's just a pain in the ass. I am either gonna grind it or get longer bolt, one or the other.

mike,
when I come down from wheelies it is frequently CRASH down, not g-l-i-d-e down like you. Thus, i like to have at least 1/2" of fork travel avail. Hey, I'm a pussy!
