cam lobes nitrided????

The brown truck delivered a pair of cams to me yesterday and I was interested to see that although the journals are bright & shiny the cam lobes are dull gray. I am assuming that the lobes have been nitrided. anyone wanna set me straight, or add some info?

How about a photo of the cams so we can see? If you need a place to host them email them to me and I can give you some webspace in the members area on my website.

Bergie,
My digicam "disappeared" 6 mo ago from my #2 son's car but I'll take some normal photos and scan. It may take a bit...

YCIS,
JUST like those only 4 cyl rather than 18, nitrided lobes rather than heat treated, maaybe a bit smaller.

What kind of shop does such large recips?

A three lober? Detroit?

Karl, mine had spray paint on them. I'd remove it all, especially around the oil passages. Don't want it getting into the oil system. Paint thinner worked good on mine.

That's normal...

It's normal for "new cams" to have dull looking lobes...
Clean them...lube them...and INSTALL them!!!
Don't let the motor idle real slow or for very long when first started...it's NOT good for NEW CAMS...they WILL get shinny...quickly though

ahhhh, paint, eh? thx for the info.

I won't be be installing 'em personally, because my shade tree skills don't extend that far. The builder (KS Cycle Works) who put together my motor last time will be doing it again after the 5/19 race at Red River.

Cam timing is still a question...
