Poll Question:
how did you learn?

Seems like a lot of knowlege here on this board,so I was wondering how everyone learned to work on bikes.I myself just tried to do what I can as I went along on my own bike.

Worked on my own stuff for years, car, bikes, mower, etc.
A few years back I started helping a buddy that owns a shop.
I still stop in to talk and turn a few wrench sometimes. It's cool
to have friends that KNOW what's going on. If I can't fix it myself
I can usually get it in and out the shop within a day or two.

Had formal training, wrenched at chevy dealer thru the 80's, shop forman at another, wife drove a "C" dragster 1977-82, many hours developing heads on the flowbench, dyno etc. for all sorts of engines. Have balanced, bored, honed, sleved, cut, ported, milled, welded, resized, jetted, tuned, blown up , just about everything.

Went back to school, and now I'm a design/engineer designing ultra pure water refining systems for semiconductor, and bio-pharm companies like Merck, Amgen,Pfizer,AMD,Intel, etc.

Now I just play in the machine shop and tinker with engines when I want to, and its fun again!!!! Its just a hobby now, no pressure!!!

Started at the age of 8 working on my XR75 Honda........Broke and fixed just about everything you can think of. Went to work and started buying motorcycles galore and modding the hell out of them. Did a lot of reading and watching. By 17 I built my first turbo bike 1980 model KZ750. It was 810cc with Carrillo rods (100 bucks a piece back then ) I did it all myself with some input from my new friend that just opened a shop George Bryce of StAR Racing fame. Still friends to this day. Mid 80's I built a Full blown Funny BIKE with a Martin Chassis,1426cc, KMS 3 speed Trans, BHP Hilborn Injection, Running 3 stages of Boost which at the time was very trick, and I owned the 3rd MTC cylinder Head ever sold. Built my own duel Mag drive set up for the two spark plug set up. (It was state of the ART at the time) Never had the cash to race the circuit so I raced it local until my son was born in 89. It got retired.(family first) Started back with bikes in 94 with a ZX11 and turboed it with my own home built system. During all this I met David Monday who is NOW my best life long friend and owns www.davidmondayracecars.com I learned to Tig weld and do my own machine work there. Built everything from ProStock to Pro Mod cars and a few Funny Cars to boot. Went to Mazak training school in there somewhere and learned to operated and program CNC machines. Went to work at a place called Oak Ridge Tool And Engineering running the largest 5 axis Horizonal Boring Mill for several states for a man named Terry Mullins. (Also a NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion) Machining cool shit for the international space station for a few years in the 90's. Met a man named Mike Thomas of NHRA ProStock fame and went to work in his engine shop(Finish Line Racing Engines) for several years hunting power from 500" motors. Traveled the country with that team and met many of my heros in life. There just average guys when you meet these guys. Went back to work Building cars with David for a while. Started this Gun Manufacturing business and have been fighting the BATF ever since. I'm about to decide to move on again fighting the GOV is a losing proposition They're about to break my will to keep fighting them.

I've done many things that in one way or another can be adpted to working on motorcycles and motors. I sometimes don't believe it all myself. But it's all true. I'm now 43 and burned out. I think I'll get a job at WalMart as a door greeter. I should have become a dentist

AND let's not leave out the part about during all this time away from home doing cool shit.............GOT DIVORCED and lost entire family..........Should have become a Door Greeter sooner .................................... Who Knew right?

That's the short version. Trust me there's a lot more. I still can't figure how I've worked it all into 25 years in the work force. No wonder I'm burned out with it

I didn't have the money to pay someone to work on my stuff so i had to learn to do it myself. I'm pretty good on the mechanical stuff but not so good on the electrical side.... but i have friends who are.

I'd last about 30 seconds as a wal mart greeter "Welcome to wal mart get what you need and get the fuck out"

I'm thinking most of us just can't stand to have someone else work on our scoots , so we learn to do it ourselves .....

that sounds good when you have the time and when you pay, If they screw it up, they have to either fix it or pay to have it done correctly. If you break it, you are shit out of luck!

When I was 5 my dad bought me a KD80. It broke alot and he fixed it while I helped when I could, mostly just learning. That's how it started and just went up from there.
