zx10 cut oil pan question?
i cut about my zx 10 oil pan from right before where the drain plug started .125 and tapered it back to 1.125 removed at the rear of the pan. when i look at the piece i cut off i figure its about 1/4 of a quart less capacity.
my question is should i put the same amount of oil or a little less??? a couple of assholes who claim to be knowledgable claim i still need the same amoun of oil. but that dont make any sense to me.

I would add the extra oil.
When you cut your pan you increase the amount required in the bottom of the pan for the
pickup to stay covered, because the pan usually gets smaller as it goes down (sump).
You don't know how much oil stays in the head on high RPM.
Lets say you have 2 quarts in motion that's 1 in the pan.
It could be fine until you try to get good 60' or wheelie causing that last quart to move to the back of the now larger pickup area. Assuming you cut the pickup to maintain the same
clearance.

do what you want
but we have had no problem running the oil at the stock height after cutting our pan 3 inches all the way across reducing pan volume by 1 quart
its only a quarter quart but you dont want the engine oil higer than about halfway up the indicator or you will have a substantial parasitic loss due to the clutch, tranny and crankshaft swimming in more oil than need be.

zx10 must have a very good oiling system.
you can't get away with that on a zx12.

eric
please expand on this "parasitic loss"; i've always wondered about it.
The trans and crank run way above the oil level, even static, never mind when it's pumping and the base oil level drops.
Where does parasitic loss, "swimming in oil" come in to play?????

Also note that the 10R is touchy about the oil height and pushing excess out the vent. Anything over 1/2 way and it will push out oil as I learned on the dyno a few weeks back. It didn't take much being drained off to make it stop, BUT 1/2 way is about the MAX it likes. OH and by the way it picked up about 2 from the oil level being lowered. I'm not sure if it was pushing it out or just slinging the stuff up and out from the rotating parts swimming in it.

I cut my pan from the pickup back about 2in up and i fill it to the middle of the site glass and have no problems. But my drane plug still hits the ground over big bumps. Ther is a good pic on the zx10zone under the "zx10dragbike" thred but his is cut all the way across.
