I run Mobil 1 Dave, usually 15/50. 5-6 quarts.

Hopefully I will be at the track tonite, getting some seat time on a turbo BUSA... heh. Chris Jones is showing mercy and letting me ride his Super Street bike in Richmond. Todd Schnitz is a new father, and won't be leaving the state for a while, and Chris was gonna ride it himself, but I got lucky. Good people for sure.

Dean you are the man. I'm glad you survived on the top end with that kind of failure. Best of luck on the rebuild.

I know for a fact that copper won't neccessarily show up in the filter. When I was saying check the oil, I meant more like every 2-5 passes. Oil is cheap or can be filtered and re-used. You have to use a paper towel to filter the oil and the pan has to allow the copper to leave the pan. The zx12's pan is not very good for doing this, as the bottom is not flush to the opening. We check the big busa very regularly, because oil and bearings is much cheaper than a crank or a lose during a money race!!! But, even with this routine, it only takes ONE PASS or ONE HALF PASS to mess up a crank.

Having dealt with this a time or two I will say that you might want to check the "rotating" end of the rods also. They can get out of round easier than you think. Just call and ask Carrillo. The check is cheap and they will recondition them if neccessary. I say that because enormous stress was put on the other 3 rods and this stress was not a balanced stress...........Kinda like a dyno!!!

yikes....do you really use a paper towel to filter the oil?

I cant imagine you are unable to find a better medium for filtering.

I have a small plug that drains the filter housing, maybe I could just drain that into a clean container and see specks. I will drain the oil after every trip to the track from now on.

I will call Dan Wagner and ask about the oil Dave, what do I have to lose. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the motor Dean. But it looks like you are on top of it and will be up in no-time.

That is cool of Jones - he seems like a good guy every time i have talked to him. Have fun on the Busa...

Glad your ok Dean .. Oil on the tire at 178 you are a lucky man...

Dean on the blown motors we run we do a tear down after every race to keep this kind of thing from happing ... We found that after 50 or so run the rods would start to egg shape and this are steel 1800 hp pro mod rods..As soon as the big end of the rod get a little out of round the bearing will lose it's crush and then spin....Looking at your rod and how blues it is that looks to be what happened..As soon as the bearing spins oil stops, rod heats up red to white hot , rod weakens and boom ... It's not an oil problem...... You are making a ton of power and because of that you are going to have to do tear downs more offten and mic the rods... I would mic the other rods and see if thay are a little out of spec, i bet you will find that they are..... If so have them resized and add new rod bolts and you are good to go...

Shame, but glad you are ok.

MrTurbo used to fit an additional oil jet to #3 on their ZX11 motors as a matter of course. If you don't have this mod it might be worth looking into.

It is not an oiling issue, it is a pressure issue and the relationship to metal fatigue.

SZX-14, please know that is it very dangerous to agree with me as your repretation could be affected around here.

YCIS, at least I use tissue paper!!!
