8.48... 8.47... Kaboom.

Hey folks. Went to Gainesville last Saturday night to work on my 330 times in preparation for Prostar in a couple weeks. The ZRX was set up Super Street legal; 64", 3" ground clearance, 2-stage lockup, Shinko tire, no ballast. I had run 8.59 @ 174 the Wed before, and Saturday I cranked up my launch rpm and was hoping to get out quicker without wheelstands. I had just taken a pic with the new ZX10 rear wheel. It will have a matching front soon.

The track was sticky and it was launching hard, the first 2 passes were 1.49 & 1.51 short times, but spinning at the top of first, missing the shift, and went 8.62 & 73. Next pass was clean, and it runs 8.48 @ 178, my best ever speed, and close to my best ET (8.472 with 30lbs of ballast, 1.5" clearance).

So I'm psyched, the launch RPM is helping, and I'm oh-so-close to beating my best. The last pass before eliminations is dial-for-dollars, and I dial 8.46 and pray for a breakout. Ignoring the light to get my RPM set, it runs a 8.476 (Rrr) @ 173.8. I didn't look at the slip very closely at the time.

Next (and last) pass, just as I'm crossing the line (about 12K RPM) the motor goes BOOM. I see a flash of light and it immediately dies. I yank the clutch and coast for a while, trailing a huge cloud of smoke. My boot is slippery on the peg. I windowed the motor.

Get home and pull the header, and here's the new view;

But the other rods move freely on the crank, and the pistons look OK. The head was thankfully safe, valves untouched. Some luck anyway. So tonite I split the cases, and the other bearings look pretty good. One main was starting to flake, but strangely the rod bearings look OK. The #3 rod was obviously without oil for the last few seconds of it's life. It didn't take long for things to weld and break. Both SPS bolts broke in half.

Now I'm looking at the slips more closely. The 8.47 should have been a low 40, I think it was starting to go. But after that pass, I rode back to the pits, didn't hear anything, and it started fine before the last pass. Maybe it was slight enough not to hear yet. And then the last pass was definitely hurt all the way down. I wish I had realized, I swear it didn't feel that different.

Anyway, I've got spare cases, block, a piston, a crank and rod on the way. Kevin and Ryan at Stock, Mild to Wild will help me with the boring and whatever else. I should be OK, but I really don't know what happened. The rods had been reconditioned to spec, all the journals mic'd the same, and were set at .003. It had about 50 passes on the build. About 5 quarts of Mobil 1 15-50. Is has a Muzzy dry sump pan, with baffled oil pickup in the tank. I can't datalog in Super Street.

I know it's hard to speculate, but maybe Doug or JC or other experienced folks may have some guesses. The part that confuses me is the condition of the other bearings. Could such extreme carnage happen so fast, and with no other apparent damage?

damn dean, that's some nasty carnage.

given what you said about the others looking fine, i'd guess (and there is no aplicable experience behind this guess) that either there was a plain material defect that finally gave way, or a blocked oil passage that kept that journal dry for long enough.

Sorry to hear that Dean. Maybe having the bearings and crank ceramic coated would add some more insurance?

Possibly filled the head full of oil, oil tank went low, pump sucked air, #3 is the first to go in this situation.
Have you increased the drain back areas in the engine? How about added aux. drain from head to pan?

Just a couple thoughts that came to mind.

Those pics make me hurt all over again.......... I don't believe questioning yourself is looking in the right direction. I haven't seen any motor, or combination of turbo, nitrous or just pump gas that has ever stopped loosing a bearing. Carrillos break just like any rod, but are just more expensive when they do break. I believe your building techniques are probably fine.

My suggestion is to developed a routine to check the oil more easily for copper. I would make the inside bottom of the pan so that the copper can flow out easy. After every several passes or careful ticket watching check the oil. You may still get some damage but not broken rods..........usually.....

sorry this happened to you!!!

That looks like my old 1427 except the #4 rod broke just under the wrist pin, so my cases had holes in the front and back.
Your attitude about this seems much better than mine was, tho. I brought my bike home and sulked for a few days, then started selling parts, which I had to re buy new when I finally came to my senses. What would life be without a dragbike?

Heh, I don't think so fish. Thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement folks. After thinking about ti some more, I know these things can happen for lots of reasons, and I'm not gonna worry about it too much. Pushing this motor as hard as I do, things will break from time to time. I am lucky the head (and my head) made it safely.

I did find a set of brand new Falicon 'upside down' rods on ebay, 2.5mm short, for $300. Can't beat that. Providence.

Ozzy - I restrict oil to the head, and was running a lot of oil. Might be getting a burp now & then tho, on the launch or shutdown.

Mike - I watch the oil press gauge pretty religiously these days, around 90psi at high RPM. It was high during the burnout at least. I wasn't watching during the last pass, but on the pass before it was high during shutdown.

RA, that's good advice (you feeling OK?), I cut up the filter every 10-20 passes looking for copper, makes me sleep better.

Karl the wristpin looks OK, still moves a little. Not discolored. The piston tops all looks good. All plugs OK.

It was hauling the mail before it blew, 178 for a 1080cc brick ain't too bad!!

Damn Dean, that really sucks. Really strange why it decided to let go. Looks like you had all the right hardware.

How hard was it to make that ZX10 rear wheel fit?? It looks nice! When are ya putting on the front?

How much lighter was the complete zx10r wheel/rotor setup as opposed to the zrx's?
