I broke mine in as the factory stated, it hit the track with 1004 miles........
My mechanic, MMI grad, said for a stock motor, that is how it should be done, but, I know others have different opinions....., but some others have not run 124 mph in the 1/8th, with the small amount of mods I have either................
200 to 300 passes on dope is ALOT

Anytime I put in new rings I use SA Rated 30 wt oil for about 50 miles. Not hard use but on the gas and off the gas between 4 to 7,000 RPMS. Then change to the cheapest Bike Oil and hard Bursts between 4 & 7,000 up to 100 miles. Then try to get another 100 Miles on the bike before racing and if possible close to 500 miles then change Oil to the Motul and down to business. It is very hard to get rings to seat with the Newer Oils nowadays

VH,
that seems like a bit much to "seat rings" on a motor with nikasil coated cylinders. I was under the impression that very little "seating" takes place (with today's hard rings + nikasil) ??????
"Back in the day" with softer rings and cast iron cylinders, it seems things were different???
Am I all wet??
I do 3 heat cyles and point 'er down the track, and ALWAYS my 1st passes on a new motor are the best that the new build ever makes.

Not wet at all. I do the same thing.
You are exactly right about the nikasil(sp) cylinders.

ENT, they do have to seat and even with using the Bottle Brush and dry start up (for the Cylinder) if they do not seat, you will not have a great engine.

I meant WITHOUT power adders........, a turbo in all forms of racing is considered a power adder...........

Thanks guys, didn't really see what we are breaking in on a rebuild.
rings don't really wear in like they use too, bearings don't need to breakin unless you are a little too tight. same trans and head. So what is actually breaking in?
Not talking about new bike, just rebuilds.
my 5 steps to break-in within 24 hrs
1. 5-10 mile test ride too check for leaks and noises. 8hrs cool down
2. 30 miles to work , 4 hrs cool
3. 20 miles lunch ride , 4 hrs cool
4. 40 miles home (long way)
5 . oil change and track time

YEEEup...

I'm with jc...
Heat cycles...more than miles...
Actual DragBikes I built/build...get started and heated up a couple of times, taken to the track for a couple of "easy runs" down the track, take bike home/shop and re-torq the head after cool down (old-school copper head gasket motors).
Then...SPANK IT!!!
We put heat cycles on John's 1260 (some on dyno while LowSpeed mapping) plus a hundred or so miles on it before I did the WFO mapping...
Then he RACED IT...all year last year...
More than one ZX12 has been 124+ with Stock Motor
