Question on gearing through the 1/4 mile?
Is there a formula for gearing or is it just trial and error? All I know is you want to be at or close to redline going through the traps. I know that I fall short about 75' before the end of the 1/4 and having to shift. 17/48 with a Shinko

I think there more personal preference involved than any real formula. Plus it really depends on the bike and rider as a combo.
Funny, I just noticed your current gearing, 17/48. I had the same gearing and a 180/55 shinko. I'd hit the limiter at what seemed like the first cone in the traps, I'd pull the clutch in on the limiter and it'd kill ATLEAST 3mph. I liked the drive outta the whole and how it ran through the 1/8th, but it just didn't finish well in the 1/4. I did like how it could even bog and still pull a 1.49 60ft though, lol.
That's what I was running before the Grudge race then I put a supercorsa and Marschesini back on it and only had a 46t for that rim. I figured I'd try to spray for the first time but couldn't get used to the gearing so I decided to save it for another day
. I'm gonna try a 16/46 setup tomorrow night if the weather holds. Depending on how it does I may try a 16/47 like Rick.

Ken, I guess you need the 17-47...That should do the trick...But, what gear are you going through the traps in???

Hmmm.... being that I don't have a 47 tooth which I would like to try, I put on a 46 stock tooth to try Friday 17/46

Then your going throughredline in 4th...You need to be in 5th, you need a 49 tooth for the rear!!!...Then you will save your clutches a bit more...

Why a 49 tooth? Is it because of the 64 " wheelbase? I can get a hold of a 50tooth and 16 from a friend?

For the summer use,
17-49 = 5 1/2 teeth up...
17-50 = 6 1/2 teeth up...
16-47 = 6 teeth up...
For cool weather use,
17-49
16-46

ken,
why not just use the rpm/mph/tire circumference/sprocket size, gear calculator???
input tire circimference, front & rear sprocket size, and it will show you mph & rpm for each gear.
If you don't have the calculator i can email it to you when i get to work later this morning

So if the gear calculator says that my 16/45 can do 177 in 5th at 11800 how would i tell that the speedo would be reading at that same rpm or better yet what is the speedo say at 162 trap speed with a 16/45 gearing.

Hey Matt, how did this combo work out for you? I have the 46/16 on mine but haven't taken it to the strip yet.

Sounds good. I hope to get mine to the track in the next week or two. I know on the street I like the way it launches.
