Poll Question:
Head Work

Doing the headwork could delay my bike until April and I would miss all of March both practice and the first couple races.

Should I leave it alone and just do the stroker or get it all done at once while its on the bench?

Poll Results:
 9 votes (64%)
Do the head now regardless

 5 votes (36%)
Wait on the headwork until this winter

I could care less what you do :)

Bergie,
have you seen the latest update from Motoman where he shows how to shape the ports using BJ weld???? I really don't know what to think of his "science", but he's sure into it.

rac4it, i do not know where you are having your bike done, but there are other places that can do your head. Everyone is not 2 months behind!!!
But, i would wait if the delay is that long. and then just have it done over a two week period of time later this summer or fall. You will have plenty of hp with the 1361 and no headwork. Plus, if you wait then you will have a before and after head comparison.

I would just do a surface clean yourself, Like I am doing, and then send the head in at a later date! Hey you might want to contact doug at spencers, hey was telling me about this shop, that did this guys head and did an incredable Job!! said flow rates were incredable!

I would wait too...especialy if YOU can blend the seats into the bowl better than the factory did and just match all the intake parts to each other...
If not just make sure the valve job is sealing good (re-lap if necessary)...

Try to make long story short
SEVERAL years ago I was at a race...
Byron Hynes AND...TERRY VANCE! were at the race (they had multiple customers at this race)...
"This guy" BROKE his motor(rod...BANG) on a bi-run (good racer luck)...
I watched TERRY help install one of BYRON'S motors into "this guys bike" in time for the next round...very cool to see back then...
As they were finishing the swap...I had the oportunity to SEE the intake ports on the BLOWN motor (also BYRON built)...
The floor WAS in fact raised with epoxy as motoman describes/shows...NOT exactly the same as the R6 head (Byron motor was GS-1100) but still the same idea...
This is something that was started many years ago...
Terry came over and covered the head after they fired the new motor...and saw me staring at the intake ports

Another example...short i swear :o
I recently met some VERY smart people (the dad has patents on hydraulic/pneumatic valve train components!!!)...
The son does the port work and I got to see some of his HARLEY heads (hey...Hardlys need ALL THE AIR THEY CAN GET...right???LOL)...
Since heat warpage isn't as big a problem with single-cylinder heads...he has the floors welded up...then shapes it to his specs...cool/weird looking but he has flow/HP#s to back up his work...
They work on MANY different engines types (blown/turbo V-8s to Hardleys)...
I'm going to get they're opinion on the ZX12 head since they want to talk to me about working on 'jap bikes' for them

KC,
thx much for the info on raising the floor of the intakes. VERY interesting stuff. I'd sure like to see before & after dyno charts, see where in the rpm the hp gets affested by how much. I don't have the cabbage to play around with that sort of thing, but really like hearing about people who do.

rac4it, i don't know where you live, but if you're any where near south jersey i'd take my bike to bob carpenters shop. he has a cnc machine so your head comes out perfect every time and he only has a 2-3 day turn aroun. drive in-drive out.
