track report - LM-1 as a learning tool

Sun nite at HRP, 98% hp factor:

60'_____1.429 (new pers best)
330'____3.755 (new pers best)
1/8_____5.721
1/8 mph_125.32
1000'___7.433
1/4_____8.892
1/4 mph_154.00 (mph down due to weather)

I am attempting to use the LM-1 to set up the 2-stage lockup and to train my rh to stop being such a pussy.

Observations:
1. Previously the log showed rpm being dragged way down shortly after launch, so after a bunch of good advice, I went to softer clutch springs and pulled the weights off 3 arms.

2. Previously, the log showed i was not getting to WOT until 2-3 sec off the line, so I am trying to concentrate on pinning it faster. On the pass above I was WOT 1.55sec off the line. I'm still rocking the throttle before going WOT but not as bad as before.

3. mph is down but air was bad; Cheese's motor is doing great!

4. The LM-1 records better when you push the record button BEFORE the pass

I am NOT claiming success yet, but feel i am at least pointed in the right direction; felt i was floundering before.

Ridgeracer (!!!!! ) shipped his custom made mph signal convertor to me yesterday (i'll get it next week), so maybe next time out i'll be able to add that capability.

yep, its working out but no magic bullet.

My heap and I are both too old and both in too poor shape to be doing this stuff, we should leave it to you young whippersnappers.

Awsome 60ft

What springs did you end up using? Would you be so kind to share youre lock-up settings and launch rpm? Im fighting a bog issue and terrible 60ft times still. I plan on going up to a 51 tooth rear from a 48. Still trying to break into th 8.70 range here. Ive got the mph but need better 60ft times. Thanks in advance...Chris

Chris,
I assuredly DO NOT have the receipe for success, but feel i'm at least heading in the right direction.

i'm running:
- 10" arm, 210-220hp, all motor

- 2 stage MTC lockup, 6 OEM springs, no weights on 3 arms, nutz, boltz, washers on the other 3

- 17/49

- strapped and lowered, stock oil pan,

- Penske shock: med on compression, stiff on rebound, stiff preload

- stage at 4500rpm; crowd the clutch; throw away the clutch; TRY to pin the throttle

about 1/3 the time I am spinning off the line, but this is getting less frequent

about 1/3 the time it starts coming up on me; rock the throttle

about 1/3 the time are half-assed OK passes

about 1/10 the time I have a really good pass which always feels s-l-o-w, no drama

What springs are you using in the lock-up plate? You may want to try the short stall springs in the clutch instead of the oem's. This might slip the clutch a little for you off the line. Talk to Tony, he also has another setup of a short stall sping and a light weight taller spring. Thanks again....Chris

Chris,
I only have a 2 stage lockup, so i don't have a lockup plate (do I?). Any light you can shed on this would be much appreciated. If I need to go softer on the springs, i'll start cutting down the Oems. Right now I am running 262# of total spring pressure and the plan is to go step wise lower if it seems i need more slip outa the hole. hmmmm...

Karl, you can still use the springs Chris is talking about, but I would wait until Buddy gets his back on the track I think they are tooo weak for the power

I might be fine where I am, just need to do a better job of launching, but i'm thinking about running 4 OEM springs as a test, see what happens...

some folks on the Schnitz forum say that's where Tony says to start.

whatta you think?

Well Karl, you are going to be SHOCKED by this news but... I am going through another break up, my living situation is up in the air again and once again I am tight on funds. I need to get the bike back up to Johnny for some more tuning. My mapping is all jacked so I can't really run it hard right now. Soon though, soon. I am sure I will NOT run any good #s though. The motor has no bottom end power then tries to rip my head off about 7k so...Not going to be good at the strip stock wheelbase and no boost controller. I might head out to the track friday night just to watch. If you go, let me know.

I am planning on going to the track on Fri if no rain. If you decide to come out I'm EXPECTING to see you with yet another cute lil spinner-type unit on yer arm. Maybe a red head this time????

If the weather holds, I will ride out there to witness the master in action. Unfortunately, I am spinnerless right now. I am hoping that a drought is NOT coming on. I change my women like you change motors huh? Atleast I still have the grocery getter, she is loyal and never lets me down!

Ya Johnny, lost my little Austin girl. She went to work for the Feds and is probably moving to DC. SUX. Broke up about a month ago. Seem kinda lost without her right now. Luckily I still have the ghetto. BTW I need to bring it to you next week or whenever your schedule allows. Its doing the same thing it was doing the first time you mapped it. I think the ghetto air filter has something to do with it. Maybe next friday?

OK thats cool. I can wait til the following week. Its still rideable but when I grab a quick handful it sputters and gargles then rips off. I have a feeling it might be down on power some to. I think switching to the ghetto filter and installing the fairings from the moroso blue race cone and no fairings has jacked the mapping and hurt the power some. The fairings just hold all that heat in there. I will call ya next week. Shouldn't take long to do, we know what it is. FAT. Also the 70mph, 4000 rpms steady state cruise and trail is UNBEARABLE. contanstant surging unless I go either 60mph or 85 mph.
