Clutches
Is there any one out there that can help me I am having a serious problem with my clutches. I cannot go to track and finsh a race without them going out in about 3 passes. The bike is 2001 ZX12R in opening I noticeds that the plates were very dry. I dont understand why cause I have the oil peice that Muzzy makes. Also I have a Billet Basket. At one point in time I had a MTC Multi Stage Lockup and there was still a problem present. So right now I am about out of ideas. I've had the mind to drop the oil pan to check the screen to make sure that it is clean to see if that the problem. If there is any suggestion please all of your help in this matter will be appreciated.

Your pickup screen won't affect your clutch, but it's a real good idea to make sure it's clean. If you've gone through a bunch of plates I would check it NOW.
I'd make sure your stack height (the total "width" of all your steel and fiber clutch plates) is correct.

Some people get a lil squirter bottle full of oil to spray on the plates before you go run. Others tip the bike over to the right as far as possible (try not to drop it) and work the clutch with it out of gear to get more coverage on the plates.
Mainly the best advice is to make sure you allow for proper cooldown between each run (20 to 30min...use a fan to expedite the process if you have to).
However if you really slip the clutch agressively off the line...nothing will keep the plates alive for the long haul....can only put off the inevitable

My gearing is 17/46 I'm realatively kind of aggressive leaving at around 5 to 6 grand. I'm about 210 with leathers on the last set that I just recently put in were spank brand new probadly set in the bike about 2 weeks. Before I showed up at the track with it. The thing that I think that I will have to do is the day before I go to the track is to take them out and soak them in oil all over again. As far as the oil that I used it was the Mobil 4xt F/S the first time I've tried because everybody talks about how good it works. However; I was having problems before then as far as the clutches I have had some of them all stock & the muzzys.

2.0mm steels or the stock 1.6s? (if the 1.6s..ditch them for the 2.0s)

Am I the only one here who thinks that too much oil in the clutch pack is bad? The last time I tried launching with freshly oiled clutch fibers in my bike, the bike pulled me into a red light right when I got onto my 2-step. Too much oil = too much drag.

Welcome to the dragracing world of the clutch eating ZX12R!!!!
I try to use the following rules -
(Clutch mod (recall) / 2.0 steels)
1. Allow 20-30 minutes between each pass
2. Soak the clutches in oil before initial assembly (Kzz1 takes care of that) but not every time we go racing.
3. Lean the bike and work the clutch lever before burn out. (I am a lightweight so this probably does no good for me - not leaning enough)
4. Leave at a lower RPM and let the clutch go.
Even with this, the clutches last about 2 trips to the track.

The oil squirter will not work with a billet basket.
You should not be racing without the billet basket.
Do you still have the multi stage, want to sell it?
Send me a PM.

some people drill holes in the outside of the basket.
but you can indeed still use the squirter bottle...it will get into the basket from the edge.

you are not the only one
when i install a new clutch, I always just dunk em, install em, then run them. The clutch is always pulling when it is brand new but settles down quickly with just a run around the block.

The only fix I have found is to pull the clutch every pass with a lock-up style clutch. Lighter the rider the easier on the clutch. Another option that has helped is Valvoline 20w50 racing oil.

Another thing, how long are you soaking your fibers before installation?

wannabe, just oil soaked clutches or did you have fresh clutches too???
I have tried soaking the entire clutch in oil and the clutch was great for 2 passes, smooth and no squeeling...Then it started the squeeling again!!!
YCIS...I have to try putting oil in a spray bottle and spray it into the oil filler hole...

CR, it did it with both. I took the clutch apart at the track one day and figured that I would resoak the fibers before I put them back in. The clutch pulled me into a red light the next pass. Too much oil = extra drag from the clutch.

Easy mod to Solve problem!
Have the Puller Shaft Cross Drilled .040!!
This will allow for a "Dual Spray" of oil inside the Hub during operation.
The 05 ZX12 has this mod on the Puller Shaft. (FINALLY!!)

You are part right psyco1122...
You have to grind a small spot on the shaft @ 1.65 from the hole end (inside) and drill a .#40 hole (Use only a .#40 and no bigger and it's to much oil, read below). Also if you are using a stock inner hub it needs to be drilled also. Same drill bit and make 6 equal marks around the hub with a sharpie mark the 6 spots. Now take the hub and measure from the inside 3/8 an inch and mark it, do the same for the outside. Now split the difference and mark in the middle. you should now have 18 holes marked. Drill and clean very well, all the time your doing this soak your clutches and steel. Reassemble making sure that your cluch pack is in tolerance. test bike, enjoy the ride.
This works I have done it on 2 bikes with no ill effects and very streetable, you can't tell the difference that it has been done, but your clutches know.
Also my bike has so much oil going to it that it does pull on me at the light @ 8000 and yes I have to hold it back. But I have had the same clutches in there for 2 years now and they still look like they did 2 years ago.
01ZX12r has seen this bike go.

Im chaging the 2000 hub for a 2003 hub with springs, since I have a new set of frictions.
To prevent from problems.
Even with the 2003 hub do I have to drill the hub?

Dr. Joe
My mod has worked properly for over 4 years w/o a single blue'd drive plate.
NO "Flat Spot" grinding needed.
I also assumed that people already have the Hub drilled. I use the Muzzy's clutch kit along w/ my mod.
My Pusher was drilled using EDM and the hole is located just inside of the needle bearing landing for the Pressure Plate.
Oh and it's spelled...psycHo!
