Which bike with the following options would be the better overall bike for the strip?

Input on which bike would have less problems and easier to launch/ control and is cost effective for street/ strip and why with the following options? NOS equipped, turbo or a big bore kit

I'd have to say turbo. Lets look at the differences

Big bore...no maintance, reliable, but only a single level of power. Middle of the road cost.

Nitrous...some maintance, less reliable(fluctuation in bottle pressure), have to change bottles often, changing jets can be a pain, clogged filters or lines can cause serious damge. Cost comparitive to big bore.

Turbo...no maintance, very reliable, turn of a dial changes HP, dial-in as much or as little as you need or want and until you have rode one and felt them pull you have no idea High initial cost but there is nothing else to buy.

Then of course I could be a little biased

How easy is a turbo bike to launch without blowing the tire or looking at the sky? I suppose and extended arm is necessary along with a tire that sticks?

A long arm is definatly a plus. A good progressive wastegate eases the launch also. Start it out soft and lean on it the furthur you get down track.

excellent follow up question KZZ, I was just about to point something like that out.....

A turbo bike, so I hear, is more difficult to launch *consistently*. I hear it's either 'bog', or 'HOLD ON'.
Even then, when you get the launch, I can't tell you how many guys just bounce the front wheel down the track on their way to a high 9 or low ten second run.
Develop the skills to launch first on a non-turbo bike and you'll be better off for it.

You didn't mention whether you were BRACKET racing, or just drag racing for fun/or street racing.
It'd also help to know how fast you want to go......

I'd vote for the big bore and slightly extended arm, for all around ease and if you are going to see plenty of street duty too.

If you just want the baddest thing at the track, and can afford the buy-in cost, and have the gonads to live with/develop the launch, then I'd say go Turbo. But not for bracket racing.

Just drag racing for fun! Its hard enough with a stock wheelbase stock bike to keep it under control. At this point I can get a low priced Hahns turbo or the kit. Just want to put the power down without wasting it

Didnt get to take it last year(mishap with a stuck throttle) Took it twice in 2000. Best pass was only 9.24@153 but that was with no 3rd gear and a extremly soft 1.53 60ft. Bike was lowered with a 8" arm and a completly stock motor and only 6lbs of boost. It made 194.9 on the dyno @ 6lbs. Went 126mph in the 1/8 before I tore up the tranny. On the 9.24 pass the mph dropped to 120. This was the first extended bike I had ever rode and was still getting used to the power and making it leave so this is really no indication of what this bike would actually do.

Bike went 10.50's @133 before the turbo and arm.

9.24@153 with no 3rd gear is still impressive! How did you launch that bike and what rpms did you leave the line at?

one thing with a turbo though, the more you turn it up the more you start asking for troubles, like needing new pistons, rods(which I would do anyway) or other goodies, but I hear they are great! the only thing keeping me from having one is $$

i think that a big bore kit is the way to go...don't get me wrong because i like turbo but a turbo will make more power the a big bore kit but it doesn't matter how much power the turbo makes because you will not be able to use the power effectively...look at all the big time street racers in this country, you don't see any of them using turbos to run for 10-15 grand out on the street...the performance preference is all motor or motor with gas...the turbo just gives up too much in the beginning for them to even bother that's why they don't use them...if you build a nitrous motor correctly it will be just as reliable as a turbo any day...if you have the money to spend on all the computers that are needed to control the boost and all that other stuff then great go for the turbo...call Kent and Muzzy and ask them what they have invested in those turbos to get them to run with the nitrous bikes...i can almost guarantee you won't get a quote under 40 grand!!

Turbo...

Kzz1... I am with TopRat... I dont know as much Tech as you guys but, I think the Turbos are best for low maintainence riding and racing...

Joe Dyno'd my 12 over at MAXIMUM POWER SPORTS in New York...
They have a Turbo Busa with a Lock up Clutch and the Rider John Flood spins the tire from start to finish and still pulls off an 8.60 @ 172.00 with minimal wheelie and all done with a 60" WHEELBASE!!!

Crotchrocket....... I would love to get a turbo and have enough $ to do it but...........its ZX12 Girl that is putting a stop to my plans . She wants to go fast too! The on way I can spend any money is to do her bike too Which means that we can afford to do both bikes with bore kits

kzz1, the family that rides together, stays together. Or something like that. If I had the bucks, I would go with Muzzy's billet stroker crank and stock bore, and add the billet cylinder block with offset cylinders if I was really flush. I watched the turbo bikes run at Indy this past Aug and they were wildly blipping their throttles to try to build up boost. A turbo does not respond by mere exhaust flow. It's the heat, and the expansion of the exhaust gasses from the heat, that work the beast. That's why the frantic throttle blipping at rest, they're trying to put a load on the turbo to work through the lag period. Probably not fun for casual dragstrip work, for speed runs, oh yes! I've not read of a single bigbore kit failure due to the thinner cylinder walls, but, everthing I've read about building up a car motor includes, the thicker the cylinder walls for bore stability and thus ring seal, the better. For bang for the buck, go with your choice and add a little N2O shot when you get bored with the new found power.

A neat thing with a motor build-up is you can always add a turbo down the road!

Get creative. You can buy 2 turbos, 2 intercoolers and 2 wastegates for what you would pay for one "kit" from a shop. Make your own header and plumbing and both of you could be happy. This is just a thought. I am trying to sell my kit now and this is what I am going to do.

Big hp equals engine stress no matter how you cut it. A big hp turbo bike is bound to be much harder on the engine than a big bore kit in the long run. Turbo power would sure be nice, though. I can't imagine have 300hp at the twist of the wrist. I don't expect my 1361 to last forever and I know it probably won't if I race a lot. But I think it'll make a more consistent drag bike in the long run. I don't run for big money very often but I do like being able to take home a trophy every now and then.
