ITS ALIVE

Finally have the bike up and going again. Did some major work over the winter and think things are going to go well, finally. First initial dyno tuning runs went very well. 187.5 and 105.6 with terrible weather conditions.
With only 50% nitrous we made 283.5 and 169.3. We have alot of tuning left to do both with and without the juice, but Im very happy with the way things are going.
1320 SBM kit
Lees ported head (grrrrr)
rpm trans and lots of other little things.
Of course this is a 2001 silver 12 Chris

Congrats Chris. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but no matter what the weather, I'm surprised a 1320 with headwork doesn't make more power than that. Was this after mapping, or baseline? Is this motor setup for lots of nitrous - low CR, big exhaust ports?

Thanks guys, This is a baseline so far. The engine is built for lots of nitrous. I really didnt plan on racing the bike off the spray so the lower hp readings on engine alone didnt bother me much. The air was so bad it was actually misting inside the trailer as I was making the pulls.

ive got let say 28 jets in the nozzles and ive got my Schnitz box set at 50 percent max. Does that help? The bike went very rich on the top end 9500 and above so I didnt make a pull at 100percent or above 10k rpm. Im not braggin on my figures or anything of that nature. Just thought I would share how things turned out.

I understand. "50%" is just a little misleading because that would tend to make most people believe that your 50% (+96 RWHP nitrous shot) is only 50% of what it will make compared to when you set it at 100%, does that mean your expecting the bike will make 380rwhp when it's set at 100%?

The most I've seen a stock engine make without breaking is 285. The most I've seen a built engine (like yours) make without breaking is 350 but that engine made 230rwhp n/a, about 43 more than yours to start with.

When do you plan to step it up to the big kit? Or are you satisfied with the 283rwhp setting? I bet it's gonna be fun to ride! I can hardly wait to ride the Lees busa we dynoed last night (208 na, 270 dry nitrous).

In the class I run im hoping I wont have to step it up to the 100% setting. I need to do alot of tuning on the nos setup as far as mixture goes. Everything will depend on how well I can tune the clutch and chassis. If I can run 8.50 at 165+ I should be right in the middle of the field.

As far as power goes without Nitrous im kinda discouraged, but I think it may be related to where my cams are set. We ended up using a 105-105 setting and will do some research and testing to see if they need to be moved. Like I said the weather was very poor and I was running the bike on c12. Any input?

01,
what CR are you running? what squish height? what deck height?

what did Leee do to yr head?? multi angle valve faces? how much porting?

I don't think 187.5hp outa a 1320 is all that bad if you were running pump gas, and if the CR is set up relatively "low" for juice.

Folks who are seeing big dyno numbers on stock or garden variety 1270's or 1320's are kidding themselves if they believe those numbers. Track mph tells all, and I have yet to see one of those dyno queens pull big mph on the track. Now, hi CR, cammed, ported set-up are another story...

Thanks Entropy, This is the type of reply ive been waiting for. The piston is down in the hole .010, .030 thick head gasket. Pistons are what they call their high compression set from SBM. I believe .040 t0 .050 dome. I havent checked piston to head clearance or actual compression.
What I was told is that these pistons without a base gasket should be around 13.5 to one static. Both (stock) cams are set at 105. Cranking compression is at 240 + - 3. Lee ported the head intake and exhaust, Titanium retainers, heavy springs and full valve job. Im using a Muzzy full Ti exhaust, High flow pump and pc3r. All engine pulls were made running c12 and nos pulls were on c16.

01,
the 240psi - 13.5:1 CR sounds about right from my limited experience; I measured my CR at 14.2+/- and it gives 235psi+/-, but with valves @ 107/110 which should give a bit less psi than yr 105/105. The.040 squish is supposed to be optimum.

For grins, you might want to do a couple dyno pulls with Nutec Sp5+. I have gotten better hp with Nutec than with VP. I'm running VP now because at 14+CR I'm concerned about detonation That said, i'd NOT run Nutec SP5+ with spray. I am told that oxygenated fuel is a BIG no-no with spray, especially given that yr CR is pretty high for spray in any event.

Where are you located????

BTW, I am happy that you are not splattering Lee on a public forum. Good move. High perf motor building is a tough biz, lots of factors, no one is perfect, eh? Well, no one is perfect except you and me, and i'm not that sure about you J/K.

Good luck with yr spray, I can't want to see track mph, keep us posted!!!

PS: take anything I say with a BIG grain of salt, cause I can't keep my motor together anyway

THANKS

I cant thank you enough. Anything I learn from you or anyone else is more than I knew yesturday.

I think my squish or quench area is very close to .040. From what im learning alot of people are running good premium unleaded fuel at 13+ compression. I was very interested in your cam settings when I did a history search on cam timing and saw all the troubles you have gone through for us. Im wondering what those settings would do for me

As far as Lees performance goes, Its not him or his business im upset with, just the situation. Like you said live and learn. Lee has been very helpful on getting things taken care of, just needs a new watch and calendar.

Ive got alot of tuning to do on the Nitrous side of things unlike the map for the engine side. Unfortunatley I wont be doing many engine pulls in the future but hoping to squeeze in a few more on the juice. This coming weekend is the big race so we will see what happens.
Once again thanks for the help.
p.s. Im in Wichita Kansas and the race is in Noble Oklahoma. You should bring that beast of yours down for some fun. May 1st and 2nd. Email me if you have any questions.

No may 1-2 races for me, I'm waiting on pistons...

BTW: I take every shop/supplier's time estimates and double em. For example, when Muzzy says 2 weeks for pistons, I expect em in a mo, and Muzzy is one of the better ones.

The only shop/supplier I have experience with who delivers when he says he will is JohnnyCheese. He says fri, he MEANS fri, even if he is up all nite thurs to do it. He da man, that JohnnyCheese!!!!!!
