MTC 2stage: still leaving soft ...

Yesterday I got a new personal best , but I left my 1st 8.7 pass at the 60' line

I am using MTC with 6 OEM springs and 3 x .050 shims on ea spring, but it is still leaving soft. This is only my 2nd time to the track with the MTC. I guess next time I will try putting 3 Muzzy springs in???? any suggestions???
R/T_____0.080
60'_____1.529
330'____3.848
1/8_____5.753
1/8 mph_128.91
1000'___7.424
1/4_____8.842
1/4 mph_157.41

Last Aug, (before the MTC) I was running Muzzy clutch w/6 muzzy springs:
R/T_____0.001
60'_____1.463
330'____3.808
1/8_____5.758
1/8 mph_125.92
1000'___7.458
1/4_____8.930
1/4 mph_147.18 (ET race, came off the gas hard near finish)

If you feel it's soft in the first few feet, then it needs more spring pressure. If it's soft from then on, you need more weight on the arms.

Also, are you just dropping the clutch lever or sliding it like you used to?

CR,
I think I am using my ole stockers, but they may??? have come with the lockup, i can't remember. Having old-timers disease is a terrible thing

I know they are softer than my Muzzy springs and even look "thinner".

I'd go with the 3 muzzy springs and take the shims off the stockers. You need a spring tension guage.

CB, that's the plan. and yes i do need a spring tension guage, although it would seem pretty easy to make??

entropy, try the OEM 1087 springs, they are a little stiffer...If thats still not enough, try the OEM 1881 springs...Hope that helps...

CR,
good tip on the progressively stiffer OEM springs. I didn't know they existed. Since I have the Muzzys, i'll try them 1st, but if I get uneven wear on the steels with 3 hard and 3 soft i'll get after the OEMs.
Thx

I agree with Cowboy, you need a spring tester. I was thinking about getting this one. It's the least expensive and most portable one that I've found so far. You just sandwich this thing in a vice with your spring.

Anyone here have any other opinions on which spring tester to get?

Not a very good picture but this is our hydraulic conversion for the Muzzy lockup. It's fitted and working. No more broken pullers!

I am happy with my MTC/cable clutch, but will be even happier when my 60's are back in the 40's.

Karl, is the bike revving high when you leave or bogging? What rpm do you launch at?

Spring tester wont get you anywhere but numbers. You need to track test. We have pulled the clutch apart at the track 20+ times in one outing messing with spring pressures. It takes practice and perseverance. Let me know what its doing, I can probably help you Karl.

THAT tester (in the picture) goes WAY TOO HIGH to do any good for clutch springs...
Didn't look at the Schnitz tester but I'm sure it's range is lower???

Karl...if the bike is reving but isn't trying to lift the wheel by 30-40 feet out then you probably need more 2nd-stage (less spring/or/more weight)...
If it only seems "slow" for the 1st 30-feet then you do need more primary spring...

ARH is right...you need to try several diff. combos...
What REEELY sucks is...all it takes is changing track conditions for you to have to "re-tune" your clutch FOR THE TRACK

By the way...1.4-anything is KILLER 60FT for a TFA rider!!! IMO...

Kev, thanks for the confirmation. I just threw up the pic. I think the right one is 100 psi max. Right?

ARH is definitely right about the clutch setup. What works for you one day may not work the next depending on the track conditions. You need a gazillion passes and a good log book to get good a handle on it.

The funniest thing is that if you ask the pro stock bike guys about their clutch setup, they will either straight lie to you or tell you to ask someone else. One of the reasons that Vance and Hynes supported Craig Treble so much in the beginning was that Craig was the man when it came to clutch setup. He had literally hundreds of pages of clutch setup logs for various tracks and conditions. V & H noticed that he was 60-footing a lot better than they were even though he had pretty much the same bike and motor. So, they ended up making a deal...V&H motors for Craig's clutch setup knowledge.

Everytime I think I have a clue, I find out that I haven't even hit the tip of the iceberg.
