shutting down
Was wondering what routines people had after crossing the line. How soon after do you sit up and do you just roll off the throttle or snap it shut?

After I cross the line, I sit up coast in gear apply the brakes gently gradualy adding more pressure on the brake lever, then down shift when it gets to 6000rpm...
This season I am going to pull the clutch in after I sit up, I was told it saves wear on the motor!!!
Im ready for the season all the maintenance is done, antifreeze, oil pickup screen, oil pressure release valve, clutch, exhaust gaskets, air filters, chain cleaned and lubed, RedLine synthetic 10-40 and oil filter...

I like to sit up immediately. Just be sure you're hanging on good. I chop the throttle and coast in gear. Most strips these days are long enough that you hardly need brakes, cept for the one I race at most of the time.

YCIS- don't do that, dropping the revs from 11,500rpm WOT and just pulling in the clutch is not good for your engine. Just roll off the throttle with the clutch engaged.
Sitting up is relative to speed. Trapspeeds approaching 165+ you should go easy on sitting up. If you're trapping in the 140s there's no reason to worry about it.

Interesting...I always thought that chopping the throttle would be worse on the engine (engine braking from 11k rpm).
As for sitting up...hehe....I tried that at maxton to perhaps "slow down quicker"......once.

I'd have to agree that you wouldn't want to do too much engine braking, especially from near redline rpm. That is SOO not good for the engine. Word.
Even though I do this, I've heardThe pulling in of the clutch at a high mph is very stressful on that puller shaft thing.

if somethin is gonna be stressed...id rather replace a puller shaft than internal engine parts
Id like to hear more thoughts on this!

I shift into high gear (lowering revs)...then close throttle...then sit-up...
Jax 1/8-mile you HAVE to HIT brakes to make the turn off...sometimes I still can't...(safely)
I beleive that pulling in the clutch and coasting (at high revs/speed) is hard on the ZX12s clutch puller but...I also HATE bringing the revs down from redline too slowly...

Same as Bergie, roll it off slowly, let the bike settle then sit up below 130 or so and brake.

I too put it up into the next gear & dump the throttle,
then sit up & apply the brakes when the bike settles.
We are talking street bikes here right?
Not a bike that is already in top gear.

Just like a lot of the guys here. First thing is let the bike settle then do what you need to do to make the safest turnoff. It's different at every track. It ranges from getting on the brakes hard at Bakersfield so you're not in the rocks to actually staying on the throttle to get up the hill in Las Vegas.

I think they can't back off their auto trans without damaging shift forks etc.

I am usually so far in front of the other guy I am sitting up and looking around at 1000ft. LOL.... and that is correct on the Auto Trans... if you roll out of the throttle it can damage Tranny parts very easy!!!.......
Oh and if anyone races in Norwalk, OH..... slow down as fast as you safely can!!!! you think when you top the hill alot more room..... NOPE!!!! first pass ever there. I think I had both tires smoking at the end.

It doesn't hurt auto tranys to back off as long as it is in high gear.
They pull the clutch because the motors are reving SO FREEEKISH HIGH that they risk hurting the motor (sooner ) if they bring the revs down slowly...It can also upset a CarTire bikes handling at high speed if you just chop the throttle...it also doesn't help the spark plug check if oil has been sucked up past the rings (some/winning ProStocks run less ring tension for less friction/drag)...
