there is a difference though.
the information given away is what most would consider priveledged information.
do you want me to give away the plans and containment building design specs for a nuclear power plant to anyone that pays postage?
yes, it may be available if you look for it hard enough. and yes, it can have legit uses by non-power plant personnel (what they are i cannot think of)
but does that mean that information should be easily accessible? or should there be some sort of safegaurd on it?
i am not saying put cameras in all public places or homes, or to tap phones or whatnot. individual freedom is paramount to human survival as HUMANS. we are individuals, not a hive. but, we have to also add on there personal responsibility. if you have information that you KNOW can be used improperly to cause great harm, do you just give it away with no cares? no.
should the 747 flight manuals be public and easily accessible? that is something that you have to decide for yourself. do you screen the buyers? or do you let anyone who wants one take it?
i have certain information i keep to myself about myself. it can be used to hurt me, it can be used to hurt my credit, or any number of other things. do i just hand it out? no.
when i was in the navy, i had access and control of documents with other people's social security number and name. it wasn't classified, should i just let it sit out? nope. granted there is a law that covers that (privacy act) as far as government entity goes.
there is plenty of information out there that can and WILL be used to cause harm to others. it is the responsibility of theone who has this information to see to it that it does NOT end up in the wrong hands.
Did fish do the right thing turning in the suspicious seller? i think that question, again, is moot. what really bothers me is the lack of care on a large number of public officials concerning any security issue such as this one.
is it a security issue? perhaps, perhaps not. was the attitude correct? i think not.
no matter how many ways you try to evade it, eventually you must face the facts that there are people out there who abhor the western culture for its freedom and openness. they will do ANYTHING to ANYONE who they perceive as a threat to their holy mission. They have vowed to kill any and all americans wherever they find them. It is apparent that they are content to kill any who stand in their way. they are willing to kill innocents, and even their own people, to get their quota.
you wantone of these guys to have easy access to any information that canbe used to further their cause?
all i want is some common sense by the people who have the information.
