Called the FBI yesterday to report this ad:

I cant believe I saw this ad in our local paper last night... It's in the "recycler" section where people give things away for free...

This is what the ad reads (I'll post it in full minus the fone #) .... here's what it reads:

"FREE BOEING 747 crew training manuals, U-pick up"

The first thing I did is call the ad... the woman who answers says I'm too late.. they're spoken for... I ask what they are... she says... oh just "ground engineer's manuals for 747's and 707's" :o

So I call 911... 911 doesnt care.. they say it's not an emergency so they tell me to call their non- emerg number... so I do that...

I call the RCMP (the police) ... I say .. "hey.. someone is giving away flight manuals.... "...

they say "that's not a crime... people can give away anything they want... "... so I say "uh.. dont you guys remember what happened September 11th? Doesnt it seem a little WRONG to you that people should be giving those things away to anyone???" They hang up on me...

So I call the FBI... I say "up here in Canada no one seems to care about this... but I thought you might..... "

they sure did...

am I over reacting or what??? I tell you it made my blood boil... In this day and age it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out the you shouldnt give that shit away... am I off base here? too paranoid? or have my fellow Canadians forgotten what happened on 9/11?

So how does the RCMP feel about boarder security? It's not okay to bring porn into Canada but it's okay to take plastic explosives (no sir, it's just tofu) into the U.S.? Though it might be temping to just brush to ad off as "harmless", the concern the FBI showed just illustrates how something like this has the remote possibility of disasterous results.

Were these folks that were giving away the manuals part of some evil plan? I doubt it. It most likely that even the folks that claimed the manuals have no "evil intent" either, but how can on be ABSOLUTELY sure? If anything, the one's giving the manuals away we just stupidly careless. It's sad that the local authorities had no concern over this. Do they not realize that with an attitude like that, they are making all of Canada a "soft target"?

Did you over react? No. You realize the potential of the information that's in those manuals and what it could be used for. It's just a shame that no one involved in the security of Canada comprehend the same.

You did right.

Now are you going to give me the "info" you promised me last week? You know production time of your "product" is more then a day or two!

I'm sure the people giving it away mean no harm, but I wonder about who would want to pick up those documents... that's all... I would've burned em myself, but that's just me.

If you want to get onto the airport tarmac, just take a commuter flight. They still unload from the stairs, and the security is a joke.

So do you think that Hayes (those automotive repair manuals) shouldn't be published? Maybe someone will use the information gained in a car bombing attempt. I may be exagerating but the point I'm trying to make is that the bad guys will always find a way. If they need info, they will get it. As you saw with your internet searches, info is out there. How far do we want to go when it comes to restricting info? What do you restrict? What about people who have a genuine interest in how airplanes (or any other machines) work? I agree with screening people that have access to aircraft but I think we have to be careful what we wish for when it comes to restricting info.

P.S. I fly aircraft for a living.

When I first started working for MCI, they just threw the code books in the trash! Every code and access switch that could be used to make calls, was in those books! One of the first people I caught using these coses was the VP's son at Georgetown!

Then what about someone giving away fertilizer? Call the feds? How about books?

Well, maybe it just wouldn't be a bad idea to record everybody's phone calls as well. I mean, if you are guilty of anything, what's the harm?

And while we're at it....let's just keep those little black boxes in cars that record what you do and where you go. That's on a problem, is it? (OnStar, anyone?) What's the harm in that?

Oh, well. What the hell. Let's just put cameras on airplanes and buses. You aren't guilty of anything. What's the problem. Oooo. Already did. Tee hee! Oh - and shopping malls, and almost all public places.

Wellllll....then if we're recording all you do and all the places you go, what's the harm with putting cameras in your home? I mean, you aren't guilty of anything.....

Am I just fucking crazy or did anyone in this country read 1984?
