Engine Break in
OK, when I got my 12, here is what I did
I warmed it up, drove it for 20 minutes up and down a 1.5 mile 500 foot elevation loop, cooled down to the touch....repeat till 500 miles or so, I think.
I am picking up my 84 cj7 jeep tom. It's getting a rebuilt engine put in it since I put a rod through the block and it caught on fire on the 5(fun day).
Amyway: anyone know the break in procedure for this? it's got a 258, new high perf hesco cam. Owner operated shop machined the block.
Anythying ya think I should pay attention to? or make sure I do?
thanks

I have been researching break-in procedures for a while. I bought a couple of papers from SAE (Society Of Automotive Engineers). I still have not came up with a conclusion. The only thing that I could tell you for sure is that the first few miles are the most critical part of the break in.
Since I still have not made up my mind about break in, I follow the factory recommendations.

...a roadracer bud swears he breaks in his engines w/30 seconds of running on assembly lube.....& a few practice laps before the races...
I've seen his bike pouring white smoke out the exhaust too many times...

just don't pay a bit of attention to that idiot motoman....if the fake pictures on his website aren't crass enough....
;P
you want to load the engine, and vary the load, but you don't want to overload the ability of the oil to carry away the erosion and wear products. or the heat.
heat is your friend, and your enemy
you need the engine to heat at a moderate rate, and to cool likewise. the heating allows the parts to achieve their designed alignment and shapes. then you allow the parts to wear together for a bit, then cool down. repeat at slightly increased load and speed.
if it heats too quickly, or excessive heat is built up, it can cause damage beyond what it should. ie it will wear MORE than it should initially.
on the other side of things
an engine that is not worked during break in will not achieve the correct ring seating as quickly, and when it is subsequently hammered after "break in" is complete, undergoes accelerated wear...which gets you back in to the overheating/debris area of the engine running
change oil at like 50 miles, then again at like 500-1000 depending on how long you want to run it
the 50 mile change helps get rid of any stuff left behind from assembly.
the second one is for any dissolved stuff and any blowby liquids.
mostly, have fun!

Ya know, one thing about some 'racer' tellin ya how he broke in his bike...Ask him how many races he had on it before he wrecked it the first time. Or about that time he had no time to check the oil level between races and it was kinda 'knocking' when he came in after the second race. I guess the point I would make is that racers prolly aren't the best source of info for guidelines on making an engine last. Hell, they just need it to last the weekend.

Break-in techniques very depending on what you want. If you want durability, then break it in with smooth throttle "on-off-on". Don't heat it up too much, use a petroleum based lubricant.
If you want it to develope maximum power, you will want it on a dyno(so the rings will seal best on decel). This will create a "loose" motor. Yes they smoke,no they don't last, yes they use oil,but they haul.
Performance is more than HP,it also includes durability...

I say ride it like ya STOLE it and hope the engine blows up before your extended warrente is up - then you can get a brand new engine, and maybe hot rod your original!!
