Anyone here own and Xterra? I've been car shopping... Test drove a V8 Toyota 4runner which I thought was nice.. I need a SUV with towing capacity etc.. none of the American units seems to hold their value, nor are they reliable so they are out of the running. Swft suggested looking at the Xterra, which costs quite a bit less than the 4 Runner. Anyone here actually own one of these and have some hands on experience/ comments? I did look at the Pathfinder, but if I were to go that route I'd just end up getting the 4Runner....
thoughts?

Until I settled on the Element for it's practicality, the Xterra was high on my list. It's pretty much a conventional SUV with a fairly robust motor. A quick search reveals at least 21 Xterra boards, covering the East, West and inbetween. Lots of personal web pages as well. Seems to have quite a following. There is of course, a Pacific Northwest Xterra Club

Let me tell you, I never have a problem finding it in a parking lot! Besides, if I want sexy, fast, good looking, I just hop in the Z06 Corvette.

Hey Fish - some of the American SUV's are pretty reliable, I have a Ford Explorer with 245,000 miles on it . So far, the biggest repairs, trans-rebuild at 220,000 miles and a new starter (last week). Other than that, oil/filter/tire/break changes is all it needed!!
I also have a Ford Expedition (5.4 liter -GREAT towing) with 112,000 miles on it. She runs like a top no major (knock on wood) repairs yet.
I'm not too sure about the holding their value aspect, but I would say that I got my value out of that Explorer .

Last year's girlfriend bought a new one in 2001. She kept wanting to know if I could make her Exterra run like my Durango. It is a dog and she hates it. I found it extremely boring.
I LOVE my (98) Durango. It will still ftech about 12K, almost 6 model years old . I've towed my 18 foot race trailer with a Corvette inside without a problem. 71,000 miles had to put ball joints in it- it was a universal failure type thing. There might even be a recall on it. Other than that, no problems at all.

Wow.... funny thing. My buddy works as a car hauler and lately he's been doing dealer demo shows. He has the New Ford 150, Toyota Tundra, Dodge Ram with the Hemi, and two Nissan somethings.
Those Nissans haul ass! 300hp / 365 tq. Of course these are preproduction units... but I couldnt believe how fast the Nissan is!
Of course Im not supposed to say anything. The Hemi was pretty close.
The Ford and Toyota are fucking dogs.

As far as production systems. Nothing comes close to the Japanese. Their attention to details is unreal.

forget about it. Soe people want to turn up their nose at one thing or another. Not necessarily because they have any experience with it, but because it 'amuses' them to see what reaction they engender from people who do care. I would agree in an overall sense with what Necro's saying, but american quality has made great strides. And I would point to the computer industry in the US as example of quality and performance. The japanese are great copiers and refiners, but poor innovators. Can anyone name the last japanese-designed general purpose computer that was built? ____________

My "SUV" ....Double Cab Tacoma with an A.R.E top. No wet dog or gas can smells wafting through the cab, more room in the back and you can take the top off to haul something tall, like say a washingmachine or a motorcycle. Seating for five. And it pulls nice too(TRD tranny cooler, headers, exh. and supercharger, should be somewhere near 300 hp?, next is a 7 th injector)
FWIW A friend of mine down in Tennessee bought an Xterra when they first came out, he likes it.

Everyone I know who has had a Durango or other "insert ameri-scrap suv here" has had nothing but problems. Consumer reports absolutely lacerates all of the american products. Doug... yer the second person who thought the Xterra was a "dog"...
