Just ordered my Muzzy basket+clutch!!

OH boy OH boy OH boy... I feel like a kid at Christmas. I got the replacement parts for the stuff I dinged the other day from Ron Ayers... then surfed over to muzzys.com and got the Muzzy Basket and Clutch parts!!! I CANT WAIT!! I ordered the Muzzy stuff via 2nd day air. Prolly silly, but I want to have the stuff in my hand - man I am impatient .

If you ordered the lock-up you are going to have to do a modification to help not break your actuators. Call MTC to ask their advice. If you don't believe me wait till the actuator breaks then ask MTC for advice.

You probably already know this, but just in case.... Doug has the best on-line tutorial for installing the billet basket:

http://prosites-spencercycle.homestead.com/MuzzyClutchInstall.html

It's got some good pictures too for us slow learners. Have fun!!!

I thought that you ordered the lock-up. Make sure that you check your pack height of your clutch because the muzzy packs that I have had measured in at 2.10 inches. The factory settings call for 2.23-2.27 inch on the clutch pack so the muzzy pack is out of tolerance from the start. This, as I have learned, leads to many burnt clutch packs. There is an easy fix though, all you have to do is add a extra metal plate to the clutch pack. There are various thicknesses to the metal plates so be careful, but with the right plate it will bring your clutch pack to the correct tolorance. I also recomend the Brock Davidson Enterprises clutch springs, they are the best on the market and they do not lose their strength because of high heat because they are made of valve spring material. I have spent a lot of money on clutches because I race Streetbike Shootout in Hawaii and it's very hard on parts and these are the things that I have learned and I want to save people the trouble.

You should add the extra plate on the inside of the clutch pack.

AHHA!! Thanks Turbo - that was my next question (where do I add the extra plate) . Can I just use one of the stock plates (they are still "good")?

One more question - I'm reading the install instructions now, they say to install a fiber plate first... if I re-use a metal plate, do I "double them up" after the first fiber plate, or do I just re-use a metal plate FIRST (before the fiber) and alternate?

Oh, by the way, yes, you can reuse the stock fibers. The fibers in the Muzzys stack are the same as the stockers. The only difference is the steels, the drilled hub, and the springs. Muzzys uses 2.0mm steels in their stack. (Stock is 1.6mm...I believe) That's why you end up having to use one less fiber and steel.

I haven't had a problem dragracing without the extra steel. Just don't forget to readjust the freeplay in your clutch afterward.

Have fun!!!

Ok Wanna - you got me REALLY confused now . When I'm putting the Muzzys plates in, do I need to add/subtract to the amount of plates that Muzzys gives me (and how do I do it)? Thanks - I've NEVER done bike clutch work before, so this is rocket science to me .

Sorry to confuse you, DP. Don't worry about it. Just go ahead and slap in all of the plates and fibers that come in the Muzzy kit. You should have 11 fibers and 10 steels.

I was just saying that the bike comes with 12 fibers and 11 steels in the stock form. Since Muzzys using the thicker steels, they only have room for 1 less of each.

If it still confuses you, don't think about it. Just go ahead and put in all the stuff that comes in the Muzzys kit.

Your total clutch stack height needs to be around 2.25 to 2.27.
I would count 11 fibers and 12 steels out... put them in a pile on a clean towel and install like this:
-Fiber plate
-Steel plate
-Fiber plate
-Steel plate
-Fiber
-Steel
-Steel
-Fiber
-Steel... etc until the pile is depleted.
Install the hat correctly and see where the outer edge sits in relation to the billet basket fingers. About 3/4 to 1/2 of the side of the hat should be visible when looking at the clutch pack.
Check your old steels and fibers close. You can lay the steels down on a piece of heavy glass to check for warpage. The fibers can be cleaned and substituted later on if they are in spec. (check your manual) Toss any warped steels immediately.
Be sure to use the 2.0 steels (the thickest ones)

That clutch pack from Muzzys, I still do not know how they can afford to make it and sell it at that price! It is cheaper than stock with a stock hub. Matter of fact, about the price of the stock pack without the stock hub! one of the best deals you can get at the Muz man, now to make sure the hub has been cleaned and the metal shavings removed (personal Joke) Priceless!

One more piece of advice that originally came from Doug Meyers: Use some acetone to clean the packing grease off of the steels before installing them.

Doesnt hurt to have extras for the perfect stack height.
My last clutch took 12/12 for some odd reason.

That's wierd, Turbo. Are you using the 1.6mm steels or the 2.0 mm steels?

Couple more questions - thanks everyone for this info, its PRICELESS.

1. Does it matter if the stack ends on a steel or fiber plate?

2. How do you measure the 2.25 to 2.27 inches? do you just stack the plates as you would when installed and measure the whole stack?

Sorry for the dumb questions, I really am new at this.

Wannabe... could have been some 1.6s slipped in there. I didnt mic every one as it came out of the package. I ordered 12/12 from Ronayers and installed them. So its possible. Ill check it next time I need a clutch.

The stack should end on a fiber.

Death.. you can measure the whole stack before install if you like.

Yeah, I doubt that you could get 12 2mm steels in there.

Ok - here is my plan :

1. Stack the stack on my workbench and measure the stack as I will install it - I'll mess around to make the stack 2.25 to 2.27 inches on the bench

2. End the stack with a fiber plate

Does this plan look good?

One more question (I think) - do you have to alternate the steel/fiber.. or can I put two fiber or two steel together in the stack?

You can double stack the steals but I would not recomend double stacking the fibers.

You can put 2 steels together, but not 2 fiber! You will be wasting the surface area of an entire plate!
