Water Wetter/Storage/Magnesium Question
All right you racers, here's one for ya.
In the local racing club around here (CMRA) like any other club they don't allow polyetheline glycol (anti-freeze) in the cooling system of the bikes.
Soooo....I'm getting my little Gixxer race prepped and I noticed that the side of the Water Wetter bottle that it says it doesn't protect magnesium.
Now. It's getting ready to be winter down here and although I don't plan on riding the bike in the cole I'm wondering about the cooling system ramifications of taking the glycol out of the system and letting it sit with just distilled water and water wetter during the winter.
Are there longevity issues with running no glycol in my bike? Should I drain the water and replace with glycol this winter as part of my storage procedures?

Magnesium WILL erode without corrosion inhibitors. I would absolutely store it with a good grade of anti-freeze designed for aluminum systems.

where does the coolant touch magnesium in the gixxer? i assume it doesnt do so with the 12 right?

Is the water pump housing mag or aluminum? That's the only place it would, if at all. I don't know.

ah, didnt think of that. was worried cause i got my bike stored without water, but i just checked and the "Radiator Relief" i use says it provides corrosion protection and is safe for all alloys, so i guess i'm ok. HOWEVER, i shoudl prolly drain teh bike before it starts freezing. it better to store a bike in cold weather (i'm talking down to -20C) empty or with antifreeze? i'm guessing the latter as empty may corrode right?

Dood. It might get down to 40 degrees or so in my garage. And I know I won't ride the Gix again until the first CMRA race in about Feb or so.
And I don't want it to sit up for three months and begin the corrosion process with just water in it.

I get an occassional ride here and there through the winter months. I usually don't ride unless the temps are mid to upper 40s though. I gotta be really desperate to ride if I get the bike out in temps colder than that. I'll never forget when I put my Yosh system on. It was late at night, 30* and windy. I couldn't stand it, I HAD to ride the bike. Boy was it cold, freakin' eyes were watering, teeth chattering, fingers numb...... But boy did that bike pull hard. I was walking wheelie after wheelie just havin' a good ol' time. But it was TOO DAMNED COLD!!!!!!
