Crank repair options
What is the best process for journal repair,
Hard welding or Hard chrome?
I'd like some Pros and Cons.

Falicon Repaired several cranks for me and no problems so far and not a long time for turn around!

I don't trust Falicon, Story to come.
Ape said 4-5 weeks.
Can get it hard chrome repaired in a couple weeks but it cost more.
Just wanted to know if cost was the reason APE and Falicon didn't use
this process, or if there are other compromises. I understand that
many of the top fuel guys use the chrome process to gain hp.
Shop claims the surface is harder than welded.
Anyone KNOW about hard chrome journals

Ninja 12,
You are confusing the two processes. The repair is made with weld, then grinding the journal back to size and finish. "Hard chrome" is a surface finish (chrome plating of a different alloy from decorative chrome) that is applied prior to journal grinding. I don't think anyone is doing chrome on motorcycle cranks as a matter of course.

Ask Harry about his 2 experiences! One with APE and one with Falicon! Ask how Looonnnnnnngg APE took to do his crank ans ask how nice it looked compared to the Falicon Job!
My 2 experiences with Falicon the cranks came back even with the "Exact" same size and was able to use the same Bearing inserts! The ZX11 I did is in Hawaii 1 year later and he is still riding the hell out of the bike!

I guess the question i should ask, would you have a crank hard chromed?
If its just the expense. It's worth it to me to get on with the process.
If there are problems with the process then i will wait.
Does it hurt reliability?

Remember, the crank is "Never" supposed to have the bearing touch it! The TZ250 Yamahas had Hard Chromed Cylinders back in the day and when the piston seized, we used muratic acid to take the Aluminum off of the Chrome. The Cylinders lasted a long time, but did not stop the pistons from seizing! Moral of the story is if you lose Oil pressure, you are going to lose the rod no matter what! Just have it rewelded, ground and heat treated and it will be as good as it was stock!

That was my first choose.
With riding season coming to a close
4-5 weeks seem like a long time, especially if its not necessary.
I don't mind paying a more if the quality is the same or better. and quicker turn around.
Thanks Vincent i'm going for it .

Still speak to Harry zx12 because he has used both of them and from the Pictures I saw, the APE crank was not worth the wait!

Gotta be careful about deep-sixing one of the 2 foremost crank shops in US on 1 person's (even Harry's) experience. I am SURE that someone has had a bad experience with Falicon, eh?

Entrophy, not deep six them, but I am saying that to pay more money and wait twice as long, they are not worth that! If the same time and same money, then even Steven! No one place is perfect,, but if a mistake is going to be made, then hurry up and make it, do not make we wait for 3 to 6 months and then make it!!

OUCH But true! If you are going to F up, do it quickly so I can have some time to fix it! Didn't someone get a crank from Muzzys that was not correct (wrong year or something) I think they had spent a lot of time waiting for a lot of parts and when time came to put it together and something was wrong, there was hell to pay! I am sure that they would have been a lot happier if they had gotten everything quickly and then when there is a problem, get it resolved quicker! then it is all in the normal time frame! All fairness to Muzzy, I think the guy was buying the parts as he could afford them and then when he had everything he started the assembly and came up short!
