hey Drew...its Jim....glad to see ya stopped by.....I am gonna throw a bit more information out here for the guys to decipher, and let them throw their opinions out at you.....so here goes...
ok fellas, Drew here is a good friend of mines son, he is relatively new to the sport of motorcycling. He is 19 years old and 5'10 and 210 lbs. I would like you to throw out some thoughts and opinions at him, so he can make an informed decision on what kind of gear and bike to buy. And to what kind of training to get before hand....so I will list out a few questions...please throw out your opinions...
1. What kind of bike would be a good starter bike for someone of his size and expierence?
2. What kind of gear does he have to have, and what should he have?
3. What kind of training, and from what teaching services should he go to..I.E. MSF, or some race school?
Drew is in the Jax area, and will spend most of his time down there riding.
Ok, this is an open invitation for everyone to throw in their 2 cents worth. I would really like to hear from some of the old timers that have been doing this along time. But please everyone throw out what you have..... Thanks ya'll Jim

I'll go backwards, since it's like I ride...
3. First thing, BEFORE he even goes bike shopping... a MSF two day rider course. They will provide the bike. It might even help on his insurance.
2. Minimum of a good helmet, jacket and gloves. It would hurt to get something better than Acme boots too. If he EVER hits the starter button wearing anything less, I'd never ride with him. I do mean EVER! I don't give a shit how short the ride or how hot the day is. THat is the very first step to being a squid.
1. Personally, I'm against getting either one as a "starter" bike. The 9R is a tad unforgiving in unexperienced hands and a 12R is just down right insanely stupid as a first bike. I'd rather see him run through Mosul with a huge Star of David painted on his back.
I'd vote either a 636 or a SV650. Especially the SV650. It's a very forgiving bike for the novice, yet in the hands of a competent rider, will take a liter bike to school in the twisties. In other words, something he won't grow out of in a month or even a year.
Last, HDL, if you let Drew get anywhere near a 12R as his "starter" bike, I'll have Kelly make you share a pillow with Harry!

absolutely, hit the MSF course. You can start the searching for a local class NOW. no need to wait. (hint, hint)
On bikes, the SV650 is a classic example,.........I've also found the BANDIT 600 an awesome starter bike. Looks like a full on sportbike,....has good top end power, but not enough down low to get into the trouble that race-ready 600 or 636 will.
Perhaps a used Honday VFR750. Forgiving. Plenty Fast. Full fairing looks good.

No good. Too aggressive on positioning, let alone starting with something making 120 hp or so. You won't get a real comfortable feeling of control. You got some good suggestions going - SV650, Bandit 600, FZR600, CBR600, etc. Stick with something that's a little underpowered, and a more upright seating position.

I am a really big fan of the SV650, or maybe and EX500and older 650 Hawk, or something of that nature. I agree with K about riding postion being very important. If you arent comfortable in the seat, you cant be comfortable on the road. Redelk is absolutely correct on what the minimum gear requirements are....and after seeing my brother after his accident up on Wyah road. My AGV riding boots are the only reason that he still has a foot.
Red, I promise I will help him in any way I can to make an informed decision, but he is a man, and able to do as he pleases. So please dont sick harry on me....lol
Drew, just know that what these guys tell you, may not be the cool thing to do, or it may be expensive, or it may just seem unnecessary. But they have learned the over their many years of expierence, some did it the hard way like myself. 8 months of rehab on my right leg has taught me to increase my stopping distance, and to always wear my leathers and boots.
and what may seem expensive in the beginign will save you in the end. This isnt a cheap hobby, in any way. I have almost $10,000 invested in extra equipment like helets and leathers nad radios, stands, tools, and various other stuff......I am in no means trying to discourage you from riding, on the contrary, I want you to do it the right way, so you will enjoy yourself more, and do it more safely....so read on, what the guys say......Jim

Learning to scrape knees is a whole lot easier (and cheaper when you make a booboo) on a good used smaller bike. If you get a 9 or 12 you will not be able to fling it around and explore its limits like you would with a much smaller bike. If you get a good used one, when you gain more skills you will be able to sell it for about what you paid for it (assuming you dont wad it). Dropping a used SV650 is a LOT cheaper than dropping a used liter bike.
Decide how much money you have to spend and dont spend it all on the bike. Don't forget the gear. GOOD gear. Good doesnt have to mean expensive. Call the insurance place after you decide what kind of bike you'd like and price the insurance on it and include that in the price. I've seen way too many people get all the bike they can afford and get shocked at the insurance costs and haven't the money left over to pay for it.
Owning a bike is an investment in fun, research it like all your other investments.

Many folks say that there are only two kinds of riders. Those that have been down and those that will go down.
Not counting the my first few bikes when I was a kid, like my trusty '69 Bridgestone 100 TMX

... my not so trusty Suzuki TM125 (it was a POS when I bought it), or the bikes that "got me back into bikes" when I divorced, like my Honda XL250S (last of the 6v and 23" front tire)... my start was on dirt. Between my DR350 and my KDX, I experienced (noticed I didn't say "learned") what it was like to go down. I eventually "learned" what it took to quit "falling over myself".
Hitting terra firma at 30 or 40 mph sucks. Then again, dirt bikes are kinda "designed" to be dumped. Hitting asphalt at 130 kills and sportbikes have no "dump-ability" built into them (the "tip over" kill switch doesn't count since it rarely works anyway). It takes 100 "human functions" to operate a automobile. It takes 300 to operate a motorcycle.
Though Gixxers and Ninjas are "cool", a single lower fairing can easily cost over $500. Not counting headlight assemblies, turn signals, mirrors and such... the complete OEM bodywork of a 12R runs for about $2000. Just ask Otis how much it cost to repair his 12R when he did a less than 15 mph slide. Let's put it this way, it was enough to where you could have bought a HJC helmet, Joe Rocket jacket and a nice set of gloves.
Other expenses such as insurance, will vary radically. You could easily be paying close to $2000 or more a year for a 12R. A SV650 will likely be 1/4 of that or less. You can buy a lot of trick stuff with that extra $1500... each YEAR! Just look in the back of any Road Racing World magazine and you'll see a whole shitload of trick SV stuff from rearsets to GSXR forks.
Just my worthless opinion.
BTW - with a SV650, you'd probably still be faster then me on my 182 RWHP 12R!

hp doesnt make you fast...skill makes you fast.....hp just makes you hurt when you dont have skill......
When Kelly dropped my 12R up at deals gap, and notice I said dropped, the bike wasnt moving, it cost almost 2300.00 to fix it......just food for though.....

Well as far as perosnal opions which would be the better starter bike the SV650 or the CBR 600.I am not necassiraly trying to do the "Cool" thing but a certain amount of what i purchase will have to do with visual.I would honestly prefer saving the moeny and buying say a new CBR600 or even if i feel i can handle it after learning a GXR750 mostly beucase it is a small bike still in comparison but still has the sleek look as well.I am not trying to sound like some stupid kid that only wants appearence.Handiling, power, and overall drivability is what i am mostly conerned about but visual does hold a certain amount of what i will purchase.

its a Suzuki Drew...SV650, or the SV650S...and an older CBR600F3/F4 would be a good bike as well, but with the F3/4 comes plastic, and plastic is expensive if you ever fall down....And let me tell you know, most guys I know, myself including, cant ride a SV650 to its limits. My buddies kid is racing an SV650 this year on the CCS circut. That kid is dam fast too...I cant run with him even to keep him in sight for more than a short time is difficult, no matter if I am riding my 01 ZX6R, or my 02 ZX12R. And if you get the SV650S model it has a half upper fairing. If you buy a bike like the SV and then later decide to buy a bigger bike, then you can keep the SV for track days and just flogging around later...or for a bike to ride while the other on e is in the shop getting serviced....just some thoughts...

The SV is going to have a more linear power delivery which makes it a bit easier to ride.
Bandit is good, too. I got bored with mine after 3 months - I was scraping pegs just buzzing around the neighborhood.
Forget about the Gix 750 or any Gix. Power delivery is too sharp and given the riding position it's pretty hard to balance all leaned over. Learn basics first.
I agree with everything everyone has said so far.
I had a friend of mine on an SV that humiliated doods on 9R's in the twisties.
So...it comes down to this. You wanna really learn or do you want to pose? If you really want to learn how to go fast seriously consider the SV. If you are considering track days and what not and want to learn how to corner that'd be the best. All kinds of hop up stuff and what not.
Check this out: www.svrider.com
But, if you just want to ride around and not worry about being Ricky Racer an old CBR is fine.
Just remember almost any bike will scare the shit out of you the first time you really twist the grip if all you are used to are cars.
Oh, and by the way. Sorry about knowing HDL. If you see him in person be sure to slap him across the jaws like the bitch he is. He might get sullen for a bit but he really likes it.

I found some info on them and i and definiatly liking what i am seeing. The only thing about the whole bike that is kinda strange to me is how the plastic is on the front but from what i was seeing you can change that so i mean the 750 looks pretty good to me.So i guess now that i know what i am getting a for a starter bike,it's time to save up for all the gear.I heard rocker boots are pretty good and that they have a pair that almost look like regular boots so i am going to look into those.
