Q for electrical experts: Ground cable

I have a bigger battery mounted in front of the swingarm and all works fine, but am replacing the 6 ga cables with audio grade 4ga. No problemo with + cable, but the goddamn - cable grounds onto the top of the trans under the battery box. Why did Kwak put it in a practically unreachable spot???

Is there something magical about that spot OR can I just ground it at a convenient spot on the motor??? Like the bolt on the upper left of the ign timing cover??

Thx for any help you can give

It shouldn't make any difference as long as it's a GOOD ground, but I'm not an expert Where the hell did you put the battery???? I couldn't find room enough anywhere to put the rectifier!!!

If you find a good, clean spot on the engine, you will be fine.

Electrically (meaning 'the Ground') the tranny and the engine and probably even the frame are all the same.

Anytime they are not the same, you get the potential for a 'difference in ground' (electrically) and that leads to odd problems, especially if the owner has added cool stuff like a Screamer, O2 sensor, radar, etc. etc.

An engine ground is the same as the tranny ground, just do a good job on it.

Thx BA!
As far as do a good job... I found Crutchfield, a co which supplies hi end car audio stuff. They have cables and ring connectors which will damn sure do the job. I had no idea car systems used such heavy ga electrical cables & connectors.

its just for when u get into serious amps. some put out well over 1000watts, and they're not exactly efficient, around 50% usually i think. so when u'r pumpin close to (or even over) 200 amps, u wanna big wire plus real big systems will use a whole bank of them big amps, so u prolyl get people running well in excess of 1000A to their amps. pretty insane stuff.

anywhere should do.... a good idea may be to "bond" the Kawi ground to the actuall frame and then you could pick any point incase any bushings etc interfere or insulate the engine..

if you bonded the frame with a jumper then you could pick any point safely, be it on the frame or on the engine.

Karl don't waste the money ordering that stuff from Crutchfield. They are wayyyy overpriced. Check out a local pawn shop or something. Most of them have a car audio section and you can get everything you need there for a hell of lot less...

Zxlnt,
NOW, you tell me... Hey, I am so impulsive, I can hardly wait for anything, already got my cable & connectors.

Yep, it is way overpriced, but that REAL FLEXIBLE 4ga cable in bling colors is pretty cool. $2.00/foot it outa be, eh?

Damn Karl....holler at em if you need some connectors. You know I used to be an installer....eh? Ran a store for five years before I moved to my current profession. Matter of fact, I did four installs last night (err...morning) for some of my friends. I've got quite a few short pieces of 4 ga laying around if you need some of that too......

Fish and BA are talking about "ground isolation" which causes lots of noises/problems in some 12v areas.

Some of the stereos we did before I left were in the 160db range (Outlaw) and lots of 00 cable and larger. Packs of batteries, capacitors, dual alternator setups.......shit got to be outrageous and EXPENSIVE quick!!

I saw a documentary where all these sad fuckers had their cars rigged up like a Pink Floyd sound system, to the extent of REMOVING THE ENGINE.... All the participants were wearing earplugs. Errrrr. Hmmmm.

These guys would put their moolah to better use by paying for a few psych consultancy sessions, instead of that new 1,000,000 Watt amp that they can't hear because the last 500 Watt amp made them deaf.
At least a loud bike pipe sounds good - but friggin' "Cheeky Girls" at 200 dB? What's that all about then?

IMHO. No offence to all the fucking idiots that drive around with a "thumping bass".

I sure could use some. Man am I glad this subject came up as I just discovered I screwed up my neg. cable. Apparently I tightened the cover down on it, & it's squished right across the cable. The distance between "sides" now is about 1/8" where it was crushed.

What should I do?

a) Replace w/stocker? (~$15 from Ron Ayers)

b) Replace w/RF ground cable? (I got a bunch of it laying around from my ham radios [8ga. solid round copper wire]) ???

Goto a pawn shop and get some flexible multistranded wire. Solid wire may break after a while due to vibration..
