I have State Farm. I pay $325.00 or so a year, but I also have my car with them. You have to have a car insured with them.

depends on exactly where u live, who you are, and ur driving record. we pay about the same as u in canada. for full coverage i would be at about CDN$2500 when the bike was new, and thats will a full discount (7 years no accidents) and living in a slightly cheaper insurance area.

2500 CDN is about US$1750 today. but almost half of that is theft insurance. for this summer, i bought the minimum insurance (200,000 liability only, no collision or theft), and it only cost me about $60 per month. of course that kinda insurance is almost useless. only thing it does for u is cover u if u hit someone (up to a measly $200,000) and lets u ride ur bike. insurance is mandatory here. cant jsut register a car but run it without insurance like u can in parts of the US.

My cousin was quoted $17,500 per year (yes thousand) by Progressive for a ZX9R 4 years ago (he was 26 no tickets, no accidents, good credit at the time)
I never even bothered insuring my bike (it's not required in Florida)

I would ordinarily agree with you, but spending the purchase price of a Ducati 999 each year for insurance is simply not a possibility. Definitely a risk though. Car insurance for my car (2001 Camaro SS) and my wife's car (1998 Camaro Z28 convertible) is $5,500 per year. No tickets, no accidents, 34 years old, married) Insurance in Miami is insane.

Kerry.....AAA in No. CA is no longer writing NEW bike insurance policies...
I just spent months searching....Progressive? They quoted me $2600...yeah right...
I ended up w/GMAC & full "everything" coverage w/100/300/100 extra high liability coverage on both bikes for $700 a year (500 for the Ninja.) Not bad here (No. CA) at all......

Full coverage I pay $1500 a year but I caught that rate just before it went up a few months ago. I hear they are trying to charge for a second passenger now. Anyone hear about that?

I pay $125/half for my ZX12R living just south of LA. For the ZX12R, an 02 Blazer, a 97 318is, and a 92 CBR we are paying about $850/half.
That is with USAA. Thank you Air Force enlistment.

quote: I have State Farm. I pay $325.00 or so a year, but I also have my car with them. You have to have a car insured with them.
That is not necessarily true.
When I bought my 12R, I found a State Farm agent that would write a policy for my bike, even though I had no other type of policy with her or State Farm.
Since I had one ticket on my record at the time, it was $430 every six months. The ticket dropped of my record three months after I got the 12R, so we had a new policy written and with the same full coverage and a $250 deductable, it dropped to $246 every six months. It has gone up slightly since 9/11. The last renewal was $286 every six months ($572 per year).
Since she was willing to write my bike policy without having any other policies with State Farm, I have had her quote any other policies I had with other companies. Now she has over 12 other life, home and vehicle policies from my family and company and we are currently working on five more for other family members and my company. Not to mention about a dozen other riding buddies who now have policies with her, due to my referal.
Like it has been said here before, DO NOT talk to just one agent from any insurance company. Talk to several. One agent might tell you that they do not write policies on sportbikes or that you have to have other policies with their company and another agent from the same company will tell you the exact opposite. The same applies to a quoted price.
Unless your dealing directly with the company (Progressive, Dairyland, Geico, et. al.), call around. There is an agent out there somewhere that is just hungry enough for your business that they will be willing to write you a policy at a reasonable rate.
It helps if the agent is a motorcyclist or at least familiar with the motorcycling community. If they are, the realize that the motorcycling community is very close knit and if one rider gets a good deal, they will tell all their riding buddies. There's almost no better word of mouth advertising then that of a bike rider.
It was worth over 20 policies for my agent.
I just did a online quote from Progressive with minimum coverage (far lower then what I have with State Farm) and a $250 deductable. $2109 a year and that's with the following "discounts":
Motorcycle Association
Motorcycle Safety Course
Homeowner
Lower rate for being a mature driver

I live in Knoxville Tenn. and ride Deals Gap every weekend so not carring full coverage on my 12 wouldn't make a hole lot of sense. I used Progressive on all my other bikes and they were reasonable until I got my 12 ($1,800 per year 1 ticket) call Geico $1,045 per year STILL SUCKS But it's worth it to ride the best bike ever built.
