SONSABITCHES!!!! I just got my power back on  . Interesting note - I was listening to Gov. Pataki (NY) a few hours back in the car...
HE WAS BLAMING CANADA (cue South Park sound track)
I just saw on cnn.com that Canada is now blaming NY .
This should be interesting....

You ever notice that almost all of the major blackouts happened on the east coast? The compound factor in all of them was the inability to reroute the power on the grids. Being so interdependent on each other, it seems that when one goes down, it will take down several more with it. either by overloading the other grids or cutting off major parts of the grid resulting in no way to route power around. Makes me happy that Southwest Power Pool handles the routing of our electricity. 
Here's some of the "big ones"....
In 12 minutes on November 9, 1965, 80,000 square miles in seven states and two Canadian provinces went black, affecting 30 million people. It was called "the Great Blackout."
On July 13, 1977, 9 million people in New York were without power for 25 hours after lightning struck upstate power lines. Looting resulted in 3,700 arrests.
On May 19, 1986, a switching problem in a substation at Grand Central Terminal in New York City caused a 12-hour blackout affecting buildings in a four-block area.
On July 6, 1999, three days of record-breaking heat arched power lines in New York City, causing a 19-hour blackout
The only two other major blackouts in recent history occured in San Francisco.
October 23, 1997, about 250,000 people in a five-mile stretch of downtown San Francisco lost power for 90 minutes or more. FBI investigators later determined someone intentionally cut the power.
On December 8, 1998, a construction crew's mistake caused a blackout across a 49-square mile area of the San Francisco Peninsula. The power went out for about 940,000 people and was restored seven hours later.

August 14, 2003, 51 Million people went with out power after "lightning" hit the niagra grid, shutting down parts of Michigan, Ohio, New York and Lower Ontario. So this shows what the terrorists could do, hit the power stations and watch the country scurry in fear. All though i do believe Detroit has its shit together, i'm thinking they locked that town down pretty tight. GO D TWA. lol
Update... Seems that it knocked out New Jersey as well, and the lighting theory is out, so is the new york state causing it theory, maybe it was a terrorist threat afterall

There was no "lightning" even within 300 miles of niagara falls yesterday.
It was a HOT and sunny all day long.

Yeah, I am kidding around, but it really sucks to have the power out, doesn't it.
Sounds like everyone is being reasonable about it (no assholes looting and shit).
An expert on pubic radio said that the NE power grid is the most unstable in the US. Needs a lot of investment and work.

Red,
I suspect that the grid has too much ability to "re-route power" not too little. All of the locals grids seem to be integrated into a mega-grid so that each area can give and take as needed, making the Mega-grid very efficient (cheap Watts).
However, the cost of redundancy and fail safe operation is huge, so it wasn't done cause the users all want cheap electricity.
This has been pointed out repeatedly since the NYC blackout years ago, and recently was pointed out as a terrorist likely target opportunity.
Invest in GE cause they will be selling a lot of switchgear soon!
