My ZX-11 17 tooth sprocket doesn't work!
I just put a 17T ZX-11 sprocket on my 2000 ZX-12R. The bike has about 12,000 miles and the original chain. I put the chain on the sprocket and the piece of crap doesn't mesh properly. Basically, if you try to wrap the chain around the sprocket, after 5 or 6 teeth, the chain rollers begin to interfere with the sprocket teeth. The stock sprocket wraps around it fine.
The new 17T tooth says "230 17T" on the side, so that's correct. If you eye-ball the two side by side, they look damn similar and it looks like the 17T should work.
One thought I had, is that my chain is worn. I measured and according to the manual, it is in spec. It's almost like the chain is too short or the sprockets teeth are spaced too far apart. So if I get a new chain, the problem would probably be even worse.
Any ideas???

I think I figured out the sprocket problem. The teeth are spaced apart the same on both sprockets, so that's okay. The problem (not really a problem?) is the rubbery cush drive stuff. After a careful inspection of the original 18T, you can see indentations in the rubbery stuff on either side of the teeth. It looks like the side plates of the chain squish down into this stuff and leave indentations. That lets the chain ride lower in the teeth or closer to the center of the sprocket. I have a theory that if I install this, tighten the chain, the chain will smoosh down into the rubbery crap, and everything will be just fine.
It seems to make sense that the chain appeared to short. I measured from the bottom of tooth grove to the rubbery concoction. It was .110" on the 18T and .025" on the 17T. That extra .1" makes the chain ride higher and appear too short.

I put a ZX-11 sprocket on my 2000 12R and did not happen to notice what you point out bigcc, but, as I recall, the stocker had the rubber piece, but I didn't think my ZX-11 sprocket had the rubber piece. Noticeably thinner, overall.

I think you need to follow SWFT's advice. That's what I did, and I had no fitment problems, just more power then I could handle, of course I also have 212 hp @ the wheel
