Clutch Problem
My clutch went, bought the muzzy clutch for my bike. Decided to put it in myself, some people say it's pretty easy. Well it looked pretty easy, but somewhere along the line I messed up. Now my bike won't run into gear. I noticed the numbers on the friction plates from muzzy differ from the factory ones. Do I have to change the basket or do I have to use the one muzzy sent me.
Can someone please help send me a copy of the clutch manual. I need to fix it, I don't want to spend the money at the stealers. My fax number is 617-210-3206

go to our sponsor's website: www.spencercycle.com...
go to THIS LINK:
http://prosites-spencercycle.homestead.com/MuzzyClutchInstall.html
It explains in DETAIL with PHOTOS how to install the clutch.
Follow the directions EXACTLY. BTW it is easy. I did it myself.

I actually have a boatload of pictures from my last installation.
If you think they would help, let me know.
PS. I think each one is like 1/2 meg or 3/4 megabytes.

Thanks Fish I will go back to the drawing board. I believe my problem was not soaking the clutch fibers properly and not putting the spacer first. Thanks guys for the help also for the not so helpful ones too. SMILE

oh... a tip... make sure you torque the clutch hub nut on install... my impact gun had no torque settings and I had no clutch holding tool, so with the bike in gear I shoved a broomstick through the rear wheel and let it jam itself against the swingarm...
hope this helps.

Thank you all, I've done it. I'm in love again. Bikes power right back the way I like it. But during the install I notice two hairline cracks in the basket. Are they suppose to be there, or will I have to replace that next time.

big12,
If those really are cracks in the basket. Replace the basket immediately or you're in for a big $$ surprise. I'm puzzeled with your difficulty in installing the hub kit. Were the instructions not clear? What should be done to improve them? "Soaking" the fiber plate is not significant. Just oil them and put them in.
No kiddng about the basket. If it's cracked get it out of there. (Die or pressure cast parts sometimes can look cracked when they are not, but be careful).

Doug.. let me read over the install instructions and I'll give you a layperson's opinion... (no offence but Spencer's were indeed better than the one's that came with the unit)... just let me look over them again and I'll point out specifics...

Doug...sorry, but I agree with fish. The instruction on the spencer's site were a lot more helpful for me than the instructions that came with the kit.
As for Big12, did you readjust your freeplay on your clutch cable? When I first did it, I somehow skipped over this step and had the same problem you're describing. The Muzzy stack height is different. Readjusting your freeplay is mandatory.

Before you do, take note that item "1" is "follow the factory service manual for all basic procedures". It is not my intention to reprint all basic knowlege of how to work on your bike in our instructions, only to point out the differences and specific items relating to our parts. But I'm always looking to improve within those parameters. As I've said before, this is a choice in style that we had to make and given the extent of background knowlege required for some parts we decided to do it the way I am lest I end up writing a book everytime I do instructions. In my opinion every owner should have a factory book before he touches his bike beyond wiping it off. Doug Ray did a fabulous job with his photo essay, no question.

I have both the factory manual, your instructions and Doug's... I understand your comment about "re-writing the book", however (no offence again) but Doug/Spencer's FAQ is a really really nice FAQ and it provides a good balance between the factory manual and your instructions.
(remember I even called you and asked about the placement of the spacer etc ... you asked if I'd read the instructions etc .. even though I'd read your instructions they simply werent as clear as Spencer's.. that;s all...)
