Gas Leak

Any one experienced or heard of this problem. . . On my ride back from Laguna Seca I started noticing gas leaking from the rear vent tube on the left hand side of the bike each time I parked the bike. This tube is connected to a catch tank. An L shaped vent tube at the bottom front of the gas tank slides down into the catch tank in a guide rail when you lower the tank to its resting position (ie after have raised the tank to get at the air filters) I have checked all the vents on the tank to make sure they are clear, including the cap vents. I also made sure none of the tank tubing was getting bent or squashed when the tank was lowered. Gas continues to slowly dribble out the vent tube even if the cap is left off the gas tank so pressure build up in the tank is not the issues. I get a couple of teaspoons of gas if it is left overnight. What was the initial gas tank leakage issue on the 2000 models?? Mine is a 2000 model but I thought the tank has been fixed under warranty.

Gas Leak

Turns out after looking at the recall notice the problem I am having is a cracked vent pipe in the tank as described in the original recall. My tank did not have the original leak and a damper was installed on the vent pipe in the recall. Looks like the damper fix doesn't work!!!! My dealer has ordered a new tank from Kawasaki.

I had (have) the same problem, but since my bike is a Canadian model, it isn't covered under KHI of Americas recall. I would have to send the tank to the dealer I purchased it from, they would send it to a dealer in Canada, then that dealer would swap it out. Since I can ride all year, I dont want the bike down for a month or two. I got some gas tank hole epoxy (it comes in two sticks, knead together what you need and apply), jammed it up into the tube and all around the weld bead and its been good for 3+ years now. As a matter of fact NONE of the recalls have been done to my bike, at least by a dealer.

WARNING!
When your new tank arrives at your dealer's CLOSELY inspect the tank for damage during shipping, BEFORE it is installed. Especially along the bottom edge lip. Due to the lame way they package the tank, these lipped edges will often be bent.

Also, make sure that they order PN 92161-1117, DAMPER. This is the self adhesive rubber strip that goes on the botton part of the tank that rests on the filter openings. It does not come with the tank and is not included in the recall. The odds of them sucessfully pulling off the old pad and putting it on the new tank are slim to none.

Thanks, Red. The warranty coordination girl at my Dealer said that the new tanks now come with an installation kit that includes all the gaskets etc to swap out the tank. The Dealer is pretty good here in Calgary but I will definitely follow up on it.

What I did to mine while waiting for the tank is to put an ear plug in the tube, and drain it every day or so.
