False Neutral??
I've noticed a false neutral 3rd to 4th gear and it makes a rattle once in a while,
Is this normal maybe I am not shifting hard enough? Will this go away?

My bike does the exact same thing. been doing it since new.
it's a 03 with 2700 miles.
Has not done it since I was told by the Kaw dealer to up shift without the clutch. They were right, shifts so smooth without using the clutch. Can't hardly feel it going to next gear. Took a little getting use to get the shift timing right when letting off the throttle. I Love it now
I know, I know, I hear it from everyone. Shifting without the clutch is going to ruin your transmission. Well, if you feel what it does when finding the False Neutral, then when I say "that will ruin your transmission.
Try shifting without the clutch.......I bet you'll like it

Yep, the only time I get false neutrals is when using the clutch. Shifts up much nicer without it.
As for ruining your transmission, I've had GPZ900, ZXR, ZZR and have always shifted up like this, never had any gearbox or clutch hassles. And you can feel that it is causing less wear and damage because it just slips in smoothly. When rolling the throttle off gently with pressure on the lever you hardly notice it changing gear.
The'box is constant mesh - who's telling you it will screw-up your box? It would on a car obviously but that's a whole different concept.

If you are having probs still, try adjusting the shift lever.

You guys will find that the shifting gets much better with good syn. oil like the Motul 300V or equiv.

I used to be a big fan of RedLine, but it's too hard to get where I am. Mobil MX4T is available and cheaper.

Did it, lowered it about an inch, no diff
still false netrual between 3rd and 4th, about 3 times a day (in town shifting)
Shifting without the clutch is the fix.....for my bike anyways
I got the 4 year warranty, and if anything goes wrong, I'll take it back to
the dealer and let the tech who told me not to use the clutch work on it.
He and I had a very long discussion on this subject, it took alot of
convincing to get me to shift my bike without using the clutch, but I am
sold on it now.......
I also use the Mobil MX4T.......made no diff either $6.88 qt (Walmart)

Doug,
thanks for the answer to a question I posted earlier. I don't have much info on the effects of oil on clutch performance, apart from the obvious additive avoidance. Does Motul have superior shear resistance - if so it should only give the same gearbox performance for longer....?
The only thing I can see that would make changing smoother is having a more viscous oil, reducing shock-load metal-to-metal.
I'm not an expert on gearbox oil performance, and I'd like to hear opinions!
