Where's the cat? and stuff
Is the catalytic converter in the end can? If it is, do you get a drop in backpressure by just changing the end can for an aftermarket, free-flowing one?
And does the Fi get screwed up by just changing the can - it adds a lot to the price when I see all this talk of Power Commanders etc.
I'd like to change the pipe (my Kawasaki dealer told me I could get 20 bhp extra, but I don't believe it).
And any tips for getting burnt-on shoe-rubber off of the original can?! The leg-iron has stopped wearing her good shoes on the bike now, hehehe.

its not in the can..its just below where the can bolts to the midpipe in the midpipe itself.
If you remove the can and look into the midpipe you will see it.

YCIS,
Thanks, that clears things up for me - now I understand why it's causing such a restriction. Is it easy to pull out? Not that I'm anti-green, I just don't like my bike being laden down with government regs that I didn't vote for.
Any idea about fuelling mods required if I ditch the cat and put on a free-flowing (i.e. race ish) can?
PS thanks for all your answers to my stupid questions Your Car Is Slow, you da Man.

Yea..at least im doing SOMETHING at work today
Anyway...take off the canister...and take a bigoll screwdriver and start digging that shit out from the sides inward...just stab it or hit it or whever floats your boat.
Then once youve removed most of the large chunks...fire up the bike with the can off and give it a blip or two (cover your ears). Itll blow the rest of the crap out that you jammed down into the pipe
While you have the canister off look inside it where it bolted to the midpipe...you will see a titanium baffle...if you can get a sharp chisel or long screwdriver or drillbit...punch a few holes in that if possible..also good for a few ponies up top

OK - before I get the hammer out, do I need fuelling changes for this?
(he says, rummaging for a hammer and chisel).

*shrug...its likely to run a bit leaner...but I doubt its enough to matter.
Have a Powercommander? add a click or two to the high range.

I took mine off and it runs fine. It really helped the pipe to not be so crazy freaking hot.
The easy way to get it off is with a sawsall. If you saw it right up next to the flange it will take the whole thing off. It will scar up the flange, but it can't be seen with the cannister on anyway.
If the tree huggers ever manage to get a sniffer inspection law in my state I could rig the cat back in the pipe too.

Wildman, because I'm curious, I am wondering at how much weight is removed when the cat is gutted. I know it is very small but anyway... Most guys remove it with pipe still on the bike so they can not weight the collector before and after (neither can they weight all the pieces and bits that flew away during the process...). However, because of your post, I understand that you removed your cat in one single whole piece? If I am getting it right, could it be possible for you to weight this piece of cat? Thanks a lot!

I reckon it's easier to go with a full system, although I quite like the look of the stock system. I'm gonna start saving my piggy bank.
I'm just a bit concerned about fuelling - is the Fi clever enough to work out what's happened with an aftermarket (or full race) pipe?
