14,000 mi. tune up
just had the bike tuned up and it cost $598.47 They found the K&N filters collapsed on the inside, one valve needed reshimming, needed new spark plugs and synthetic oil.Still feel it was well worth the money just to have it done right. How much has everyone else been paying.

...my 12R is being tuned up (minus oil change and air-filter service) for $300+parts (I provided the sparkplugs)...I also have K&Ns and the fullsynth. oil has only about 1000 miles on it...then I'm having it mapped on a DJ w/TuningLink for $200...that's what they told me...we'll see how it goes...I'm curious to see what my 28K mile piped, KN'd, & PC3R'd 12R will do...I'll keep you guys posted...
...how does a K&N collapse other than during a bad installation?

I have a feeling they colapsed on installation. There were big gaps where the sides were supposed to fit in the slot.I had to take them out and clean them so the dealer wouldn't replace them with stock. To get them all the way in,I had to push down on the corners and that caused the filter mesh to go concave. The rubber frame is so soft that once the mesh bent, the frame stayed caved in.I had to stick my mitts in the air box with a screwdriver and manually push open all the pleats.By the way, when I cleaned out the air box,I noticed all the dirt was on the hind side of the velocity stacks.Ijust found that interesting.Cleaned all out with WD40 and a rag.

I cant believe K&N is still selling those filters.
Has anyone talked directly to them about these issues?
There is no excuse for making a filter that colapses when installed.
Get the BMC filters and you wont have any issue.
These plugs are platnum.
The plugs should last the life of the bike. This style of plug is being used in cars now with a 100,000 mile service life.
Wow, for $600 they should have changed the fork oil and changed the brake fluid also.

...got it back...'feels smoother'...163.5hp/85ftlbs @28000 miles...K&N, full Muzzy, PC3R...got it mapped...two valves were tight, the rest were within spec...DJ w/Tuning Link...I guess this is good as it gets...stock 2000mile DJ run was 165hp/92ftlb...more than I'm capable of using anyway...good thing the pipe and PC3R were bought used and in like-new condition and CHEAP! (less than half price) or I'd have thought I wasted alot of money...the filters were gratis...now all I have is a bike that's louder and smoother but with more 'character'...I guess

My '02 is getting close to 12K. What have you found to be the case with the valve adjustments? It is running fine, but I was told it is a must at 12,000 miles.
True/False Can I wait, if so, how long do you recommend.
And the Platinum Plugs, Brand and or part number that works best?
Thanks.

as Y2K wrote above, u should not have to replace plugs at 12,000. they are scheduled for replacement at around 30,000 if i'm not mistaken, but could last longer. i'v never needed any valve adjustments, but many have needed some minor adjustment.

Well, I think they are in the service manual for 12,000/miles checkup. I have an extended warranty, so I had the 'dealer' check them to ensure that service was on record just in case sumthin goes 'boom' later.
Which, btw, is a fuckin joke. They forgot to torque the bolts down, and when I got home I was dripping more oil on my garage floor than a Harley. I HATE anyone to touch my bike. I even strip all the plastics off when I take it to them because I know what idiots they are.
The windshield was scratched changing the front tire once (different dealer) , so I bought a front stand and just take the tire in. I guess I really need to just get my own tire changer!
Damn, I should just manufacture all my own parts. Yeah, thats it. The Snap-on truck can add my house to his route!

Damn this thread is old. I dont know why the dealer is changing plugs at 12,000 except maybe to line their pockets... buncha dumbasses.
Nda... doesnt matter how long the warranty is.. just keep records. Overpaying a dealer isnt going to make warranty claims any easier in the future.
