California Emmisions/Registration? Starting this fall I am going to be in Alabama for aproximately 5-6 months before I move to Cali for good. I am looking at purchasing a motorcycle in Alabama. Does anyone think I will have any problems getting this bike registered in Cali? I don't know if the "enviornmental impact fee" applies to mcycles in Cali, I know last time I lived there, it applied to cars (and I was exempt because I am military). Thanks in advance for the information.

Yes, you'll have some issues. Unless you have at least 7500 miles on the bike. Yo may want to consider buying after you move.

Is Kalifornia a deferent country or what? It seems like they have such different laws from the rest of the US. No offense to cali bros - but JEEZ, emmisions suck, firearms laws suck what else?!?!

...what swft said...and very expensive if you want to live with without the riff-raff around you...so these, my friends, is why I'd like to relocate outta here when my tour is done...maybe to NM or AZ or NV or UT or OR or even MT...
...but irony is that its seems to be a meca for anything hi-perf oriented...you can find a lot of stuff around here...and some great roads up in the mountains and coast on the weekdays (when everyone else is at work)....strange....

There are two issues. One is the emissions deal which on a Kawasaki really isn't an issue, because there is no performance impact, just some hoses to remove if you want to clean things up a little. Although legally the bike needs to comply, there is no requirement for inspections on motorcycles (YET). The real issue is the sales tax and registration fees. Registration will cost you about 3% yearly of the current book value and if you don't have at least 7500 miles on it (subject to inspection at the DMV when you register), you will have to pay the current CA sales tax AS IF you just purchased it in CA. That tax, depending on the county/city you live in can range from 7% to 9% of the value.
Yup, sucks. But, one ride down the coast from Monterey to Lucia early on a Sunday morning makes everything right with the world.

I would love to take that ride, Doug. Ran out of time last October. Got down *to* Monterey, but didn't get any farther south.

Someones getin ripped off. Calif. must be gettin hosed. Cost for fuel has gone down consistantly every week for the past 2 months. I suprised Gov. Grayout Davis hasn't enacted a law to make the oil companies give fuel away. $2.59 for prem. is crazy. We are selling it for $1.69!
