How many G's?
Here's a question for you guys out there. How many G's would you have to pull to break the speed of sound in a quarter mile. Say it's sea level, so that's what, 620mph? Chuck Yeager did 662 to break it at 25,000 feet, so it's gotta be lower than that at sea level. That would give us an idea of how big a turbo to put on a 12.

ok - @ sea level the spead of sound is about 750Mph - its gets lower as you go higher, because the air density is lower (the closer/denser the molocules the FASTER sound can vibrate through them). soo... assuming you are moving from 0 to 750 Mph in 1/4 mile....

actually, I meant to say the speed of sound gets "lower" at higher altitudes because the air density is lower at higher altitudes.. the explanation is still the same .... dense air = high speed of sound, less dense air = lower speed of sound =P

yeap..9.8meters persec persec of accelleration...and given that accelleration isnt constant during a 1/4 mile run...this would be somewhat difficult to figure out.

BTW - calculating the POWER required to break the sound barrier with a '12 is a MUCH harder calculation. Air pressure gets interesting in the "trans-sonic" area (around .9 mach). For instance, it requires less power to travel 751 Mph (FASTER than the speed of sound) then it does to travel 749 Mph (SLOWER than the speed of sound). I have the equations written in front of me, but I don't feel like cranking them out - its too nice a Friday .

Check my math:
750mph = 1100 feet per second
In a vacumn, a object would accellerating at 32 fps would reach 1120 fps in 35 seconds, right? And travel 20466 from a starting point.

Top fuel must see just about a constant 3G, or maybe 5G initial and 2 plus constant. 3G constant works out to 320+ mph at the quarter mile stripe. If they were able to continue at that accelleration rate for a full mile (and no greater wind resistance) they would reach over 670mph at the one mile mark!

I think it's somewhere over 18Gs. You'd get 576 feet in the first second, so you'd have a sub-1 second 1/8th mile time, and would crack the sound barrier right before crossing the lights. Hmm...Gonna need a chute, I think.

I've been about 6 to a blackout w/o g suit-just grunting.
The Top Fuel article cited 4.5 g at the launch, still carrying 1g acceleration at the lights.

good work guys! BTW 18 G's IS doable.... just has to be for a small amount of time (very small) the trick on high G loading is time of g load on the human body - and there are some threshholds for high G loading that you can NOT cross - like the g load that occurs when you decelerate from terminal fall velocity to ZERO (like when you fall out on an airplane without a chute). Very few live to see that kind of instant g!
