Stumble on starting
Okay, I've resisted going down the modification can o' worms because I wanted to just ride my bike, not fook with it all the time. Well, now that the can of worms is open, I gotta eat 'em or throw 'em out.
I've advanced my timing a la Y2k's redneck garage poseur timing method (moving the cam sensor up a little bit by wallowing out the holes).
Some time after installing my PC3, NOW what I'm getting is a stumble at start up. Most of the time it will start just fine - but sometimes it will hiccup. It sounds like it's trying to turn over but then it just stops. Almost like there's too much compression and the starter can't turn the engine over. But, it will pause a bit then turn the engine over. But it will still start.
I've loaded a 0 map and it will do the same thing.
I also have a bad clutch cutoff switch that's going to be replaced here pretty soon. My bike WON'T start with the clutch engaged - only when it is disengaged.
Other symptoms:
+ Sometimes when I blip the throttle from idle it will die - just stop much like when it 'pauses' at startup. Changing to 0 map SEEMED to help.
+ Sometimes the FI fault light will appear for 1/2 second, the bike will cut out, then it comes right back on.
Possibilities:
1. PC is hosing up even with 0 map. Will disconnect and see what's up there.
2. Timing mod has hosed up. Perhaps sensor isn't where it needs to be.
3. Short in clutch cut off is intermittently hosing with the ignition.
4. Service guy respliced the clutch cut off wire coming off the switch. I've asked him to replace the harness since he did some splicing on it. He's not sure what Kawasaki will do since he 'fixed' it. I call bullshit.
Anyway, one glitch and it's not a big deal. But now that I have a couple I'm getting worried and anxious. Mostly due to the fact that the last thing I need is to be worried about it cutting off in apex of that 120 mph sweeper...

my guesses on the starting hiccup would be:
You're right, the symptom seems to be too much timing, compression, etc.
- bad ground for PCIIIR.
-are you really sure the TIMING map is zero as well as the fuel??? If so, that PCIIIR seems suspect.
- I've never done the timing mod, so I can't comment on it really.
- You could put some NEGATIVE numbers in the 0-1000 part of your timing map to see what happens.
Does the bike run fine after it finally starts? ie. never a hiccup during a cruise or spirited ride??

Not the blipping of throttle. Haven't had it die on me. BUT - the FI light coming on happens infrequently. Both on bumpy and smooth roads, leaned over and stright up.
Yep, checked Ignition table and it's zero unless at high RPM with high throttle input.
Another service guy suspects a faulty ground wire. I can almost see that one...

A few people have had starting problem WITH THE PCs...
Dynojet has been trying to figure out what the problem is but has NOT been able to duplicate the problem (last I heard)...which makes it imposible for them to fix it...
As for the other issues...it sounds like you have a bad conection somewhere...check ALL the pins in the connectors along with the power wire that goes to the brake light wire...
I have yet to see a downloaded map that runs as good as a custom map done for YOUR bike...

Fully agree and preaching to choir here.
It's going to take about a month for my pipe to get here, so I hope I'll have all this straightened out by then (I better).
I'm going to schedule a custom map dyno run at DG6 with Chris. There's not anybody around here I'd trust to make me a custom map.
Will check ground and what not.

I can duplicate it at will. Assuming I don't have an electrical gremlin or what not.

It's the goddamed PC3!!! Even with 0 map and everything set to 0, I get the stumble on starting.
I unplug it, and it starts fine. Plug it back in, stumbling reappears. Where's the number to Dynojet? I'll be on the horn here in just a minute...and DON'T start with asking me to reboot the PC. I'm a little more advanced user than that, thank you.
By God, I CAN recreate the starting issue at will. And my bike is basically stock. I feel pretty good about this, muh man.
Another curious thing is that I have to load a map into the laptop - I can't just pull it directly from the PC. In other words, I can't just fire up the laptop and do a 'get all' to download my maps. I get a "PC and Desktop software incompatible" error. BUT if I load a map FIRST, THEN do a 'get all' I can get the map out of the PC.

Nope. Just got off the phone with DynoJet. Rob tells me it's a wire that introducing too much RF noise that's causing the kick back. He added 'it only happens when it gets hot, right?" Yep.
I'll send them my unit, they'll basically add insulation to the wire, then send it back to me. This should take about a week for them to do.
I think this one should get filed in the library, FrEEk or Fish.
