Cam degreeing

Got lots to do to the 12 this winter. Muzzy clutch, basket, braided brake lines... Anyways, I am going to check my valves and was wondering if degreeing the cams was worth it. My bike peaks a little lower and made a little less horse than most others and I think the cams might be the problem. Anybody know of a good place to buy the cam degreeing equipment? Tired of borrowing my buddies. Also are the cam sprockets pressed on? Curious to see what I'm getting myself into. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

The cam gears are pressed on, however Muzzys as well as other suppliers offer adjustable sprocket kits. You should use the largest degree wheel you can find(at least 12 inch.)Doug Meyer has written a very good step by step how to degree cams article that I am sure he will send you if you ask him.

Doug where ya at? I would be very interested to look at your degreeing article. I have done all my old Kz's This will be my first modern bike though, a refresher would be nice. Thanks!

I too, would be interested in seeing the article

Seeing how I'm not really as excited about riding in sub-zero temps as I used to be... It's a project I'm might consider tackling this winter.

Me three, like Jessz, I figured while I was in there I might as well do it. Not sure of the optimal settings for the Akrapovic exhaust so I think I'll start at +1 intake -1 exhaust and take it to the dyno and play

From what I understand Doug mentioned that he'd be out of town this week test riding some of the new cruisers, for a major cycle magazine.

cam timing

silver, 103/101? thats an excellent choice for the street.

I had 102.5/101 from the factory and the bike ran great in the midrange and made 181 hp.
If you drop the block the intake at 103 will be very, very tight. The intake valve will be very close to the piston. Make shure you check the intake valve clearance!
104 might be better. Maybe 104/103?

Rob, have you ever cut piston valve reliefs in the block?

Also have you any notes on piston deck thickness at the valve relief for a stock piston?

I think he means deepening the existing notches with the pistons still in the block(not disassembling the motor). I've cut some forged flattop TRWs that way a quarter inch deep! Started with no notches at all. Lots o strip passes without a failure. I've got a 12 piston on bench. I'll try and measure it tomorrow.

I have tooling to cut automotive pistons and have done many. But not in the block.

The pistons are meatier than I expected, around 4mm in the thinnest spot. The factory notches extend to just 1mm over the top ring land. Shouldn't be a problem if you just cut enough room for the valve itself though. My JE's are roughly the same thickness. Any tips for cam timing on a 1361 for street and strip use, Y2K? I like max power around 10-10.5k. Doing a little headwork right now so I'm hoping to take more advantage of the kit. Probably won't see a flowbench, though. Only real restrictions or flaws seem to be the id of the seat inserts and matching of the boots and tbs. Also doing a little chamber porting(opening up chamber to new bore size, unshrouding valve seats).

I dont have any info on cam timing for the 1361. Havent messed with one.

As far as porting... your right , there isnt much to improve. un shrouding the intake valve in the chamber was worth a few % flow.
The low lift numbers is where I got most gains.

Castings and port design is so beyond the Iron head V8 castings of the 60's and even 90's car stuff its not even close.
