If da creek dont rise 'n da dam holds.......

....Well,it didn't. The Silver Lake dam ruptured. Flooded the Dead River basin threatening 3 lower dams. The last one broke at Marquette, MI. Evacuated 480 acres of the town, flooded the Presque Isle Power Plant, washed all their coal supply out into Lake Superior. May be down as long as 30 days. Lucky for them we were shut down for an annual maintenance outage(I am a power plant operator at a paper mill) We've been making power for the electric company for 5 days now. Gonna be interesting when we try to start back up tomorrow and need our own power. Can you say livin on the edge? nothing like a little (OK, a lot) of added stress to an already tedious job. Hope you fuckers had fun at the Gap. See ya next time.

Scooter, how do you guys generate? Gas turbine? Just curious, as a powerplant operator myself.

BTW, we have three Solar Gas Turbines for our cogen plant. Works fine, lasts a long time. We also have a diverter installed between one turbine and the Heat Recovery Steam Generator. Makes it easy to back off steam generation when we don't need it but still make electricity. The best part however is the "start it and forget it" nature of the cogen unit.

now granted this is at a WHOLE different level than what u guys are talkin about, but i got a friend who has 10 acres, most of it with a good slope, & he's made enough power to run a few heat registers with a pellet [sp?] wheel & 50ft of head with an 80 gallon drum at the top. not too impressive but gets the job done. tho that little old generator he has eats thru bearings liek nobody's business. but over the last couple years i bin helpin him run a new 6" pipe from the powerhouse to a new small damn he built across the same creek... wwith 400ft of head! this thing is gonna rock if he ever finishes it. has a MUCH bigger wheel ready to go too. only thing thats too bad is the power is of course too dirty for anythign other than heat, and the equipment to clean it would just be way too $$. man, i love this shit. the idea of being able to support urself without any outside help rocks.

I have friends in the nuclear industry and they have no plans on leaving it. We were all raised on Navy nuclear power and have no qualms about working around it. After 15 years, I'm getting back to a nuclear plant job this July. They can build Goodyear tires overseas and close my factory, but power generation can't be shipped in from China. Now that they have a way of extending the life of reactor vessels, I expect some job security in my future.

Dan. I got about 20 more LOL! I shouldda checked deeper into that Kingston TVA job last summer. And 12rPilot, start it and forget it, Geez, If only it were that easy. Only thing easier is oldkawbows job,(is there water in the lake?...OK , spool it up and tie it to the grid ) Paper mills have the whole chemical recovery thing to worry about. Plus supplying the varying steam demand to run the paper machine/pulp mill. The smelt(lava type "ash") from our boiler will explode exponentially times greater than TNT if water comes in contact. Helluva bad thing if you have a water leak in the furnace. Emergency shutdown proceedures really are, Rapid drain trips and such. Lotsa red tape and regulations(and shit to remember). Have a steam driven turbine generator and 2 other boilers. Bark gas coal. Damn near did the Navy thing myself. Nuke subs, backed out at the last minute, kinda regret it now.

Here's some pics of the flood damage....

I will be at Road America from the 6th through the 12th. Races and two trackdays. I don't know what I'll be doing Monday and Tuesday. Prolly go over to Door County. BTW, if you've never rode Road America on a ZX-12, you owe it to yourself to try it. I'm hoping for 180mph on the front straight this year. Last year with stock gearing Motobeagle and I were touching 170.

Coal Stoker

12rpilot ,I too work at a powerplnt here in VA. It's a 62mw coal fired stoker. True you cant ship in electricity, but deregulation has things stirred up pretty good. Our plant has been sold at least 5 times in 4 years. It doesn't give you that warm fuzzy feeling.

Wanna ride RA at some point. Cant this year, gotta go pick up my new enclosed trailer in Elkhart, IN right after the races. Then get back and set it up before working the weekend. Heading for the Gap with wifey and the kids on the 16th.

Wanna take a cruise down to Indiana the monday after the races? Trailer will be ready between the 9 th & 11th. There's some nice roads in central WI for a bike ride.
