Ride Review : Metzeler M1 Sportecs......

I got 3 days of good riding in during the long weekend I took. I really got to put the Metzlers through a pretty good test and I must say I am pretty impressed. I won't rant and rave and say that they are worlds above the 010s. But they definitely are great tires that inspire confidence. I am more than pleased with them and look forward to seeing their wear characteristics as the miles rack up.

I've really been trying to carry more corner speed, and trying to break myself from punishing the rear tire on exits. It's a hard habit to break when you enjoy juicin' the biatch on exits like I do. I still can't say enough about how much the swap to a 180 rear helped the bike. I hate the fact that I have a new 200 mounted on my other wheel that I will run sometime in the near future.

Bottom line, I think the M1 Sportec is a tick better than the 010. Seems a little more "grippy" and gives excellent feedback. As I said, not worlds above what I was running, but a step in the right direction. Also, I don't want to jinx myself, but with over 500 miles of wear on them they still look new. That's a first for me and ANY tire on the 12R. Still the true test will be next month at the Gap. Stay tuned..........

Tire Care, WTF, Quit Lieing

Rick,
Who the fuck are kidding???
You are harder on tires then Big Daddy Don Garlets, you wouldn't know how to take care of tires if they where the last set on the planet.
I'm glad however you found a set that you like. I still am a huge fan of the Corsa's, they would last you about 300 miles. Since my slow ass is only getting 1,000 miles out of them.
Let's see if they make it to DG5.

Yep....

Bart,
I did really like the Pirellis Mark sent me. They were awesome in every way. But I'd have to start sellin' dope to keep rubber on the bike. I got less than 300 miles out of the rear he sent me. (used) He figured I could get 1K out of it. I think he knew better. But what he did do was win me over on getting away from a 200 series rear. I will run another set of the P's one day when my wallet can stand it. Right now I'll stick with the M1's, that is if they can handle our pace we run on the trip. Oh yeah,...I AM LEARNING TIRE MANAGEMENT JR. !!! Still slipped a little last Friday when Big Mike and I rode. He told me I was painting some pretty good ones down from the apex on out in a few curves. Funny thing is that I was intentionally running one and two gears higher to let the bike float in better and keep my corner speed up, and also to keep the motor down off the boil so I WOULDN'T be spinning. I'm honestly trying dude, but I figure all that shit will go out the window next month. Especially since I'm bringin' another set of wheels that are shod with new skins.

Harry,
You told it straight brother, the sportecs are a real good tire. I also think you may be right about them wearing better. Early indications are looking that way, but I, like you, am a show me kinda guy. We'll see what they are made of when we're at the Gap. I may say that they aren't fit for a fucking John Deere riding mower after the trip.

You better be using them lower gears coming out of the corners or you may get "rear ended" when exiting corners!

I ordered 2 180's from ron ayers just now. $213.38 + $8.00 shipping on each tire.They were cheaper than kneedraggers.com. I tried a 180 before but decded I'd try a couple of M-1's in the 180 size.

Ask yourself 2 questions..........

quote:

Have I ever steered you wrong? Would I lie to a brother? I know your riding style Chris, you owe it to yourself to atleast try 1. Remember, you were skeptical about the 010s vs. the 207s??? I told you to take a leap of faith and you did. It all worked out, you love the 010s. Same deal here, if I had one inkling that you wouldn't like the 180 I'd just say ride my bike at the gap before you make your decision, (you still can) but the 180 is the shiznit son. Lucky had to send me a fuggin' tire before I'd run one, now I feel like a dipshit for not listening to him @ DG1!!!!

There are others here that run the 180, zhooligan, fish has converted, I think even freeks gay ass is gonna try one. Big Mike rode my bike last week and he was astonished at how well the thing worked. I could go on and talk about it all day but the suspension changes and going to the 180 transformed my bike in the handling department. Drop the front about 6mm, go to a 180 and enjoy.

scooter,
You read my mind, that is definitely scary stuff right there!!!!
