Installation of dog bones

Tried over the weekend to change the dog bones to different hole, BUT didn't complete the job as the bike was very unsteady and was afraid to drop it.

I placed a jack under the shock to lift the bike but it was unsteady. Twisting the nuts caused the bike to wobble and so I quit until I get some advice from the experts.

Any body done this and how???

TIA

Stick a 2x4 under the REAR footpegs so that about 1' sticks out on either side

Then put some jackstands up on some cinderblocks...and support the bike that way.

If you do this while the bike is on a rear stand...you can take the rear stand out and the wheel will be off the ground and bike is supported very well.

leave the kickstand down and then raise up on the underside of the shock.. oh loosen up the bolts before you put it on the jack....

Also, you cannot take the dog-bones out if you put a jack under the shock. You have to totally unload the rear suspension to get the bolts out. YCIS's method works too, but here's my method.

1. Put the bike on the rear stand.
2. If it's a Handy Stand, tie wrap the stand to the left (port side) bobbin.
3. Put a jack under the oil pan and lift it up slowly until the bolts are unloaded.
4. Swap holes..

Thanks guys for the assist.
I tried the jack stand unders the foot pegs, had to remove the exhaust can and the next piece of the pipe, stand fit under the foot pegs no problem.

Still didn't get the bolt out, the gorilla who put them had his Wheaties that morning.

I'll get my bud the mechanic to do it while doing the map for my PCIIIR.

Thanks to all

I did a Yamaha R1 yesterday and it was a cinch. I loosened the 17mm bolts and had the owner pull the bike onto the kick stand and hold the back wheel off the ground. Once the back end was unweighted, I pulled the bolts out and swapped the dog bones. Took all of 10mins.
It took about 3" off the seat height. (he wants a 12, but has to lower his R1 for his wife to ride...lol)
