2003 ZX-12R muffler

I ordered Power Commander III for my bike. Also an sport muffler (Fuel). I will take my bike to motorbike sales and repair shop for installing the PC III, I thought it might be OK to install the muffler myself.

12R has a wide exhaust pipe which goes to the muffler (outer diameter 72 mm), sport muffler has at the entrance a inner diameter of 55 mm. Does Kawa have a pipe-inside-a-pipe where it goes into the muffler? I cannot see it before gutting the end of the pipe. The picture explains: http://www.hot.ee/hyke/Pipe.jpg

If 12R has a single pipe that goes to the muffler, then there might be a problem with gases that come from the pipe and should flow through muffler? I could cut the opening of sport muffler a bit bigger but the inside of muffler remains the same size.

Welding the muffler onto the pipe would not be a problem but I haven't done it yet as perhaps the outcome will have an influence on engine's working stapility.

Thanks if anyone can help!

Remove entire stock exhaust sytem from bike, throw in the trash.

Replace with any aftermarket full exhaust system for a significant increase in power.

The end.

The stock exhaust system has the catalytic converter in it too, slips inside the can. You definitely want to replace the full exhaust system. You should be able to find plenty of used ones (cheap) given the pedigree and age of the 12.

And yes, the 12 stock system use pipe within a pipe, in that is has a head shield layer on the outside.

Hi, thanks for the info. Could you please tell me which is the diameter of the inner pipe? The outer is 72 mm.

My e-mail is hyke@hot.ee or write here, please.

Thanks!

Haven't seen any good looking solutions to add just a bolt on muffler because of the way ZX12:s headers are made. They get to one pipe just before that cat and even if it is a two pipe system before that there just isn't any way to use smaller pipe after that. If You want a different muffler the only wice move is to get a complete exhaust and not just an bolt on because the "link pipe" on ZX12:s original headers is that big.

I now took my bike to the motorcycle shop. They will install the PC III and a sport muffler which is with a bit smaller entering diameter but will be fitted. They have a special person for that - the guy has built great amounts of exhaust systems.

When I get the bike from the shop and there is a nice-weather-day, I will try it and later write the comments here.

Hi again,

just for conclusion of this topic.

I got the sport muffler installed. They built a whole new (is it?) flame-pipe. There were also some rust damages that were fixed. Now the bike has a beautiful low sound, responds to the throttle incredibly quickly.

Sadly it is snowing and raining continuously here, so I haven't had a chance to test the bike. More for later then.

Ride safe!
