It has holes ddrilled in it to get oil to the plates, and the spacer is modified to allow oil to get into the center of the hub. Along with some nice new clutch plates. I just drilled holes in mine and put a flat spot in the puller shaft to allow oil to come into the same place, and it cost me zip. Although I did put 3 ZX9 clutch springs in.

Go all schnitz springs!!! ALL 6 (six) for the extra pressure, and the clutch feels much better too!!!

I run 6 heavy duty springs and agree with ra12r that does feel better. And based on your riding style Fish you could probably do the mods Ted mentioned to your stock set-up and be fine.

well... as I said I have the muzzy unit sitting here now...

now... what I wonder is this.. and I will think out loud here fer a sec...

just whyTF doesnt Kawi drill those little hole in the unit when they make it? Seems rather odd.... they'd save themselve a lot of grief... the unit itself appears to be pretty much 100% stock minus the extra holes drilled... (correct me if I am wrong)

so.... what exactly is going on here? I mean... why arent they including this "mod" if you can even call it a "mod" on the production bike?

anyone looked at an 02 or 03 clutch to see if they have the teeenie weenie holes?

I have heard that those holes are in the new bikes! Have not seen a new one apart so can't verify!

k... so what about the 3rd...

I mean..... if all Muzzys did (no offence to them cuz obviously they are thinking and Kawi... well.... Kawi.... uh.... ) was drill some holes in some stock bits, and then send a diff configuration of other stock compontents and the 100% fixes the problem.... why wouldnt Kawi just do this themselves..

I mean... are the people at Kawi.... stupid????

(sorry... I just woke up)

No fish, they're not.
They are building a clutch that is more than suitable for 95% of the worldwide use. We are tailoring it for the few thousand guys that want to do drag race type starts, many times back to back. Kawasaki purposely REDUCES the oil flow in the clutch area because it keeps the oil cooler and reduces windage loss.
As I've said often, in most cases we don't do anything that can't be duplicated either slowly and cheaply by one person with the time and tools, or very quickly and more expensively by someone with expensive CNC tools, and we take the time and do the testing to figure out what needs to be done to fill a need. Believe it or not (which most won't) Kawasaki has an "action threshold" for concern of less than a few percent. That is, if they start seeing problems in more units than that, they take action either with re-design, service letters or in extreme cases, recalls.

You mean there are people who own the 12 and don't do dragrace starts at every red light/stop sign????

....mmm very odd, very odd indeed....who are these people and why do they own this bike?

Look at it closely fish-ster...the holes are NOT all the same size...they are NOT (all) just drilled "straight" into the hub...there is a trough(sp?) machined in the hub for the oil to "follow to the holes"...ummm what else??? they send/sell you the thicker (2mm) steal plates in the kit also...and...I too like using 6 heavy duty springs
STILL a great deal/price for the kit in my opinion...

I have to disagree about the dragracing thing and the cluthch's going out because a friend of mine who is 45 years old bought a brand new ZX-12 in 2000 when they first came out and broke the bike in 2000 miles and his clutch went out with 2400 very easy miles on the bike....explain that to me.

On the other hand, I have a 2000 model that I purchased new, that now has almost 15,000 miles on it, and all indications are that the clutch has worn very little.

I do experience the "dry plate chatter," but only rarely. And no, I don't do drag race starts at every stop light!
