So you want to be a racer ? Don't expect to get rich.....
.......at least from the prize money. I thought this was interesting.
The purse for the 2003 Daytona 200 will pay the winner $16,000, and features a thousand dollar payout for the pole position.
Top ten purse payout
1. $16,000
2. $10,500
3. $7500
4. $6500
5. $5500
6. $4500
7. $4300
8. $4100
9. $3900
10. $3700
... remaining positions paid out on a sliding scale: 35th place pays $800.
Total purse $140,000 (includes $25,000 Arai bonus and $2000 front row qualifying bonus)
Now compare that to the Daytona 200 10 years ago....
1983 Daytona 200 Purse
Total purse: $100,000
(all payouts included pre-entry bonus money)
1. $14,570
2. $9770
3. $6625
4. $5715
5. $4800
6. $3890
7. $3560
8. $3145
9. $2815
10. $2656
Not much had changed, has it. Now compare to running NASCAR at the same track.
From NASCAR.com
The purse for this year's Daytona 500 was the biggest in stock-car history, nearly $14 million, with the winner taking home at least $1.3 million.
The posted awards have been announced at $13,816,240, an increase of $1.5 million from last year.
"The Daytona 500 is the most prestigious race in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and this year's competitors will be rewarded handsomely for their efforts," Daytona International Speedway president Robin Braig said.
The driver who takes the checkered flag in the Daytona 500 will pocket a minimum of $1,352,080.
Even the driver who finishes second can't be too upset, when he finds out his check will be for $949,550.

Fun and exciting racing but we are still a very small group of people. I would imagine as a local guy you can attest to seeing the number of people in the stands for the AMA Superbike race versus the number of people at the NASCAR races. The attendance at the Superbike race looks like the briefing for the vendors and security people it takes to operate the Daytona 500 venue!

Wow, if you consider inflation over the past 20 years, the AMA purse actually dropped.
