Taking deposits on ZX10R's

I was in Toronto at the bike shop where I bought my 12R. The salesman who sold me my bike told me he has deposits already for 2 ZX10R's.

He also told me that Kawasaki is currently the best at settling warranty claims.

There may be a 10R in my future. -ZXtra

I'm a little on the cautious side. The 12 was the first bike that I got in line and put a deposit on. I think I'll wait and see how the 10 shakes out.

Yeah as I recall a number of guys lined up and paid about 12K for there 12. And then there are the folks like myself that paid 8K for the same bike new! If the ZX10 doesn't deliver all of the goods I am sure they will be available cheap!!

I was one of the many on these boards that paid my deposit for a 2000 ZX-12R months before it was released and paid damn near full retail for the bike. I still love the bike, but have always felt like I took it up the ass on the purchase price. It will NEVER happen again!!

One thing to remember is that the guys that paid full retail did it to have an exclusive, unique exciting ride before anyone else in their town did. Anyone could have told you that the price would go down as the year (or next year) went on. Look at guys paying $23k for a Ayrton Senna or Bostrom 998S. It's no different from a 998S other than paint, but they lined right up irregardless.

I don't regret it for a second but then the 12 was potentially a milestone bike. I wanted to start breaking mine in ASAP. I'm not sure that the 10 will be a big step up from, say, the Gixxer 1K.

Did the 12 stomp the competition? Was it a quantum leap ahead of its competition? Was it over hyped by Kawasaki? Did it not fall short of the anticipated mark?

Did the the Hyabusa blow away its competition and set the standard? Did the GSXR 1000 blow away its competition? Did it set the standard in it's class?

My point is that Kawasaki set the level of expectations to high and didn't give the public what was expected. How difficult would it have been for Kawi to have produced the 1270 or 1361 knowing and having in their pocession the busa? I want he 10 to be a killer and will buy one if it is. But Kawi has to prove they can build the bench mark in the class.

Zhooligan is exactly right on this. The 12R is a fantastic bike, but it has never blown away the Busa or "raised the bar" for other big-bore sportbikes to match.

I paid near retail for mine for several reasons ---
1) That's what every dealer in my area wanted for one and they weren't willing to deal.
2) The dealers had deposits on damn near every one that they were going to get for 2000 and I actually believed that everyone that had a deposit on one was going to take delivery (sure as hell didn't work out that way!).
3) I thought the 2000 ZX-12R was definitely going to beat the Busa hands down and if I didn't get one when they first came out I'd have to wait for a 2001. I figured the dealers would sell every damn one they could get their hands on and there wouldn't be any heavy discounts - period. Of course, I was WRONG!!

As far as having an "exclusive, unique exciting ride before anyone else in their town did" --- that wasn't all that great of an experience! Most people either didn't know what the fuck it was (just a very fast red blur!) or they DID know what it was and had already caught wind that it wouldn't match the Busa - that Kawasaki had snipped it's nuts before releasing it. I loved the bike (and still do), but I really don't think many I've met have been that impressed. Right or wrong, MOST people (at least in my neck of the woods) believe the Busa is absolutely the fastest bike made - the ZX-12R doesn't even enter their mind as a seriouis threat to the Busa.

Bottom line --- $11,800 was too much to pay for the over-hyped 2000 ZX-12R. I'll wait until a bike has been on the showrooms for at least 2 or 3 months before I even consider trying to make a deal from now on!

Hence the word "potentially". When I put my deposit down they were talking 200mph and stomping Busas. That's what makes me so gun shy on the 10. Fool me once, shame on you..........

I paid full boat for mine, BUT I didn't buy it because I thought it might be faster then a Busa, hell I didn't know or care what a Busa did. I don't read the magazines because I found out many years ago they were full of shit. No, I had a ZX11 that was a great bike and I intended on keeping it, but going to the Kwak shop I saw the new 12 sitting there, I loved the color(green), the snorkle was too cool, the sporty look, and good suspention sold me. I plopped down the credit card and told them to have it ready by 5:00. I didn't even know about the big rivalry between the two until I found LABusas. This bike is far more fun than any other street bike I have owned except maybe for my first bike a YL1 Twin Jet Yamaha. And to this point it has been a great bike, it has more than devistated any bike that has come up against it on any road. There is no other bike for me. No regrets. Now the accessories I have bought...that is another story.
